  1. WHO ARE HIPPIES? Hippies are a category of people  Usually young men and women  Who practice counter-culture ideals  Celebrate nature, peace, and love  Often experiment with drugs  And hold liberal values on sexuality. 
  2. WHY ARE HIPPIES? Hippies came about in the 1960’s  They protested the Vietnam War  Attempted to break from societal norms  Inspired by Buddha, Henry David  Thoreau, and Gandhi.
  3. Hippies started in the United States.   Mostly in San Francisco, California.  Haight-Ashbury was known for many hippies  There were other movements in Europe.  Some created communes away from society.  Gathered at psychedelic music

  5. WHAT IS HIPPIE MUSIC? Psychedelic music-Inspired by LSD  (Jefferson Airplane) Folk music-Used to protest (Bob Dylan)  Pop-Hippie music was mainstream (The  Beatles)
  6. FAMOUS HIPPIES Timothy Leary-Famous proponent of LSD.   Jerry Garcia-Grateful Dead founding member.  John Lennon-Beatles founding member/activist.  Abbie Hoffman-Founder of “Yippie” movement/activist.  “The Merry Pranksters”-Famous group of traveling hippies.
  7. HOW ARE HIPPIES? \"People today are still living off the table scraps of the sixties. They are still being passed around- the music and the ideas. \" Bob Dylan (1992) Hippies are still around  But they’re not as influential  Former hippies gather at country fairs  Society still borrows from hippie culture 
