Objectives <ul><li>Raise awareness of the issues that require intervention </li></ul><ul><li>A biblical perspective on making a difference </li></ul><ul><li>Practical realities and pitfalls associated with service </li></ul><ul><li>Learn about poverty in a chocolate simulation game. </li></ul>

Assignment - Pass <ul><li>For a pass complete a minimum of three services through the Community Service Office </li></ul><ul><li>Make a Blog with photos and reflections on your service. </li></ul><ul><li>Attend required class sessions and answer question on the material presented. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Assignment - Exemplary <ul><li>Complete 5 or more service opportunities </li></ul><ul><li>Develop your blog to include research on world issues, presentations etc. </li></ul>

Major World Issues <ul><li>Twenty major global issues and 20 years to solve them. </li></ul><ul><li>Most of these stem from the effects of Rapid Population Growth and Rapid Growth in the World Economy. </li></ul><ul><li>Both these things put huge pressure on Global Systems. </li></ul><ul><li>If we do not solve them the impact will be huge. Already around the world people are suffering as a result but we don’t necessarily feel the effect yet. </li></ul>

  17. 17. Is caring for the poor Biblical? <ul><li>The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. (Luke 4:18) </li></ul><ul><li>The first Christians were known for how they loved one another because they shared their processions (Act 4:32-35) </li></ul>

Doing STM without doing Long Term Harm <ul><li>In 2006 American Christians alone spent $1.6 billion sending 2.2 million people on short term mission. </li></ul><ul><li>If not done properly it can hurt the poor and those going. </li></ul><ul><li>There is also no evidence of a significant increase in Mission giving or people going on long term mission as a result of this increased spending. </li></ul>

Fulfilling the Great Commission in our Jerusalem (HK) <ul><li>Meeting the needs in our immediate community </li></ul><ul><li>Meeting need in Hong Kong </li></ul><ul><li>Life beyond the bake sale. Get personally involved and Make a Difference. </li></ul><ul><li>Each of us has a personal responsibility as humans. This is not something just for Christians. </li></ul><ul><li>Service brings fulfillment and personal satisfaction as well as meeting the needs of others </li></ul>
