Metamorphic Creatures Expedition Student Page Metamorphic Creatures Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Credits [ Teacher Page ] A WebQuest for 2nd Grade (Science) Designed by Jeanette Corliss [email_address] Based on a template from The WebQuest Page A WebQuest on some creatures that undergo metamorphous.
  • 2. Introduction Student Page Title Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Credits [ Teacher Page ] Metamorphous is a biological process by which animals or insects undergo a physical change. Who are some of these animals and insects that undergo the amazing transformation called metamorphous? Grab a pen or pencil and some paper and prepare to become a research scientist on an expedition! Be sure to take good notes as your fellow researchers will need as much data as possible!
  • 3. The Task Student Page Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Credits [ Teacher Page ]
    • All around the world are animals and insects that undergo metamorphosis, it is your job to identify some of them and explain them to your fellow researchers. You will participate by:
      • Search online for animals that undergo metamorphosis
      • Examine photos of animals that undergo metamorphosis
      • Hunt all over the world for the strangest animals and insects that you can locate that undergo metamorphosis
    • You will do all of your research using the internet, be sure to document all your findings and write down web links so you can return to them later if necessary.
    • Once you have completed your expedition you will be required to share your findings with the fellow researchers in your group.
    • You and your fellow researchers will compile the information you have found and create a poster board of some of the most unique or interesting creatures you found and present them to the class.

    • Hooray! You are about to go on an adventure! Before you begin your expedition your teacher will break the class up into several groups. Read the following information to become better prepared for your journey:
    • Choose a leader for your group.
    • You are to begin your research by finding the definition of the word metamorphous.
    • You will be traveling around the world in just a few hours, so be prepared with a notebook and pencil for taking notes
    • Locate animals or insects that undergo metamorphous, choose the one that most interests you and gather as much information as possible
    • When you are finished consolidate your information with that of the other members of your expedition, include where you went, what animals and creatures you found, and detailed information about your favorite creature.
    • As a team create a poster board and prepare a short presentation for the whole class about your teams creatures.
    • Remember, you are an expert in the field of scientific research. Be sure to gather as much relevant and useful information as possible.

  • 6. Conclusion Student Page Title Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Credits [ Teacher Page ] Congratulations! You have survived a worldwide expedition to discover creatures which undergo metamorphous! Now you shall take your information and share it with the rest of the class via a presentation. Ensure that each of your expedition members gets a chance to share what they discovered on your adventure!

  • 9. Introduction [ Student Page ] Title Introduction Learners Standards Process Resources Credits Teacher Page This WebQuest is designed to help children gain a better understanding of animals or insects that undergo metamorphous. By each member of the group contributing a portion of the information for their expedition the children will learn the value of working as a team. The students will share the information they have gathered with one another, thus making it so each student learns all the information, not just the information they gathered. When completing this webquest students will use the internet to gather information. They will be visiting many websites with the goal of gathering information on metamorphous. • 10. Learners [ Student Page ] Title Introduction Learners Standards Process Resources Credits Teacher Page This lesson has been designed for third grade students and will be emphasizing a scientific and biological approach. Before beginning the lesson students will need to have a basic understanding of what metamorphous is and how it is defined. Evaluation Teacher Script Conclusion

    • Science Standards
      • The student will demonstrate an understanding of metamorphous
      • Student will demonstrate knowledge of some creatures that undergo metamorphous and the type of metamorphous they undergo.

    • Break students down into groups..
    • Give students a basic definition of metamorphous, then allow them to research the definition further on their own.
    • Explain to the children that they will be traveling around the world in just a few hours, so be prepared with a notebook and pencil for taking notes
    • Ask them to locate animals or insects that undergo metamorphous, choose the one that most interests them and gather as much information as possible.
    • When they are finished gathering information ask them to consolidate it with the other members of their expedition, include where they went, what animals and creatures they found, and detailed information about their favorite creature.
    • Have them as a team create a poster board and prepare a short presentation for the whole class about their team’s creatures.
    • This lesson can be taught in one day over the course of a few hours. With at least two hours in a computer lab.

    • Describe what's needed to implement this lesson. Some of the possibilities:
      • Computer access via a computer lab for two hours
      • Poster board, one per team
      • Fun materials for decorating poster boards
    • One teacher can effectively lead this lesson

    • The WebQuest model is best suited for learners who can navigate the Web on their own and can read the kinds of material commonly found on the Web.
      • Allow the children up to two hours to complete their internet research.
      • Anticipate questions regarding if a creature actually undergo metamorphous
      • Be sure to direct the children to begin working on their poster boards around three hours into the project

  • 16. Conclusion (Teacher) [ Student Page ] Title Introduction Learners Standards Process Resources Credits Teacher Page The metamorphic creatures expedition is useful in a few ways. First it is useful as a supplement to a science unit discussing metamorphous. Second it encourages students to individually work for the benefit of a team. Finally it helps to hone students use of the internet and search engines. Evaluation Teacher Script Conclusion
