Baby Development and Senses in Womb
Baby Senses in the Womb
10 weeks
By 10 weeks of age pre-borns are capable of swallowing.
14 weeks
By 14 weeks they can taste sweet, bitter, and sour flavors circulating in the amniotic fluid. In the liquid womb space a
number of acids, salts, and proteins flavor the fluid.
11-15 weeks
Between 11 and 15 weeks the baby develops the ability to smell a variety of scents as the amniotic fluid flows through
the nasal passages. Things that the mother eats and smells can transmit both flavors and odors to the baby, so take
care to avoid ingesting or inhaling strongly odorous foods and scents.
16 weeks
Babies can hear well by 16 weeks gestational age and are responsive to sound for the last 24 weeks of pregnancy.
Both male and female babies are extremely sensitive to touch. In fact, baby boys have been known to have erections
detected by ultrasounds as early as 16 weeks prenatal age in reaction to touch.
28-34 weeks
Eyesight develops when the pre-born is between 28-34 weeks and are capable of opening and closing their eyes after
26 weeks gestation. This means that as vision develops, the baby will become progressively more sensitive to light.
As the baby grows and stretches the uterine muscles, the womb walls become thinner and allow more light to enter.
“A woman has two smiles that an angel might envy, the smile that accepts a lover before words are
uttered, and the smile that lights on the first-born babe, and assures it of a mother’s
love.”
Thomas C. Haliburton
A Safe Womb is a Happy Baby’s Room
There is no time in a child’s life when a parent can keep them completely safe from all hazards, but the pre-birth
period is a particularly important time in a child’s life since its forming system is so very sensitive.
Having a smarter, healthier, happier baby means raising the preborn in an environment free of hazards and intruders.
Take care to make your baby’s pre-birth accommodations even nicer than a five star hotel!
Enjoy the journey!
