      • Hire the smile, train the skills
      • We tend to hire for skills, but fire for characteristics
      • The “right fit” is more than what is on paper
    3. Probationary Period
      • Only time person is “at-will” employee
      • Purpose is to demonstrate what employee will be like
      • It is not a formality
      • Red flags are indications of employee performance

        • Deal with any resentment
        • No favoritism
        • No gossiping
        • DELEGATING
        • What is a win?

      • What do your employees do all day?
      • Write it up
      • Instructions for the next person
      • Clear guidelines as to what is expected

      • 50% reference services
      • 20% collection development
      • 15% marketing
      • 10% supervising
      • 5% programming
    7. Show an interest
      • Show an interest
      • Don't micromanage
      • Staff don't have to explain what they do everytime they ask for something.
      • 90-30 rule
    8. Hold people accountable
      • Conversation about problems
      • Verbal warning
      • Written warning
      • Harsher written warning
      • Time period to improve warning
    9. When do I have a problem
      • Not getting it? Expectations must be clear.
      • Dealing with disagreements:
        • Just two don't mix?
        • Or one doesn't mix with anyone?
      • Who is toxic? examples:
        • pleasure in finding fault
        • "people skills" need improvement
    10. For you
      • Know that there will be times when the job is emotionally draining.
      • Build relationships with your employees
      • Get a hobby
      • Spend time with family/friends
      • Take time off
      • You will laugh about some of the hard stuff later
