The Innovation Tug of War On one side of the “tug of war” is the desire for big, disruptive innovation. On the other side, a fear of risk, uncertainty and costs.

Mutually Exclusive? Disruptive Innovation Risky, time consuming, Unstructured, Uncertain Business as usual Comfortable, Structured, Predictable These are always in opposition. And the more “disruptive” the concept, the more risky and uncertain the innovation effort.

Incremental usually wins
In most instances, the fear of risk, the anticipated costs and uncertainties cause the team to focus on incremental solutions when innovating
What can we propose to satisfy both disruptive requirements and relieve some of the challenges about uncertainty, risk and cost?

The BHAG A BHAG is a “Big Hairy Audacious Goal”. First described by Jim Collins in Good to Great, this is a goal that an executive sets out for a team.

Disruptive Innovation is a BHAG
From an innovation point of view, the goal of a disruptive, breakthrough or radical innovation is a BHAG
It is an audacious goal that the management team has defined.
That establishes the goal. Now we need to relieve some of the risk and uncertainty

90 Days 90 days is the basic unit of measure for most businesses – one quarter. That’s how often results are reported, and most organizations can’t think or plan much beyond this time scale. So let’s use that to our advantage!

Rationale
A 90 day BHAG is limited in time, cost and resources, but the team has freedom to be as disruptive as they can be within that timeframe and cost structure.
This gives the executive team some visibility and risk reduction while ensuring the team has the encouragement to think creatively

Procedure
Executive team identifies one clearly defined problem or opportunity
Assigns the team to create disruptive innovations based on this problem or opportunity
No changing scope, no exploration of other concepts
Team evaluates trends, examines customer needs, generates ideas and creates prototypes
Management team commits to review prototypes and make quick decisions

Prize Inside Beyond generating disruptive ideas and reducing risk, this approach has the additional benefit of encouraging the team to use new techniques

Adoption of Innovation Tools
Given a daunting challenge and limited time, the innovation teams must find new ways to work
Older, traditional processes and models won’t suffice
They must collaborate and communicate effectively
They’ll need new techniques and tools to generate and evaluate ideas

Prototype In the 90 Day BHAG, we require the development of rough prototypes, far more than just the generation of ideas

Why Prototyping
Instead of simply generating a range of ideas that aren’t tested or validated, the 90 day BHAG requires the generation of prototypes
Generating a rough prototype tests the idea and ensures the team has considered its strengths and weaknesses
Executives can more accurately assess a prototype and determine its value

A disruptive initiative focused on challenge or opportunity identified by the executive team
Several prototypes or simulations presented within 90 days for further action or decision
