An Gorta Mor

 1. 1. An Gorta Mor The Irish potato famine 1845-1849 By Alex Nelson
 2. 2. Roimh an Gorta “Before the Famine”

It is 1844, the year before the Great Irish Potato Famine began. The population of Ireland is believed to be over 10,000. Farming is good. The economy is stable. Nothing is there to suggest a brewing disaster.

The irish potato is the prominent cash crop at the time, and roughly 35% of the population is made of farmers.

 3. 3. Agus mar sin si tosaigh… “And so it begins…”

It is 1845, the year The great irish potato famine

( a.k.a. The Great Hunger, An Gorta Mor, An Drochshaol) began. It is caused by an infestation in the potato crop known as pathogenic water mold, also known as potato blight.

 4. 4. Sad, sad day.

It would appear that I have forgotten my flashdrive. But, I still wish to finish the project.

The famine lasted 4 years and brought many immigrants from Ireland to America. Americans thought the Irish would take their jobs away, resulting in much prejudice. Thus the Irish Maffia is believed to have been born. The famine officially ended in 1849, taking with it the lives of many Irishmen.
