    Well said jayjayd.
One of the the pitfalls of slideshare.net is that my slideshows depend on me being in the room. I use slideshare to distribute slides in lieu of handouts.

That being said; here’s the answer:
I instruct the kids to do a 'three word sentence' (which of course is not really enough words for much of a sentence). I’m not really looking for a proper sentence. I tell them to think Tarzan or Frankenstein. The idea is to help them identify a subject and predicate, so that later, in more complicated sentences they are able to ignore any additional words that complicate the issue.

Bottom line, it’s just a phase. Which doesn’t playout well in the 'still' version without me.

    Hope that helps.

Did you like it otherwise? I can tell you this technique has helped me raise class after class by one to two stanines.

  2. Why is it every Fall, teachers teach nouns...
  3. and it seems like a totally new thing for kids?
  4. Most kids know that adjective or adverb means “modify” -
  5. BUT can they apply* this knowledge? *Write an adverb in a sentence?
  6. What does modify MEAN? I’ve literally waved a $20 bill around in class, but still can’t get a real world answer from kids
  7. Here’s the problem: Everyone is following the book too closely
  8. Here’s the problem: All our textbooks are built on a “spiral up” model of learning
