  • Abstract:Mobile, social, local and digital are the four key mega-trends changing the Web. They are also changing the way people shop and how we view commerce today. But what do the shifts in commerce really mean and how can the Web developer and entrepreneur communities take advantage of these changes? In the new commerce reality its not about location, location, location, its about innovation, innovation, innovationeBay Inc. has a unique set of assets to drive the future of commerce and has brought them together in a new cloud-based platform called X.commerce.X.commerce brings together all the eBay assets in one place to help merchants grow their businesses and connect developers to merchants so they can do what they each do best. Developers can create innovative commerce solutions, allowing the merchants to focus on creating a differentiated customer experience The X.commerce platform opens the door to immense opportunities and value for Web developers and entrepreneurs. They finally have a way of connecting their innovations to businesses large and small.

  • For the first time in history, consumers are using technology to fundamentally change the way they shop. Four Megatrends are driving these changes: Mobile, Local, Social and DigitalConsumers can use their mobile devices to find, research and pay for items, bringing the store to them, anytime, anywhereWe’re seeing a blurring of the lines between the offline and online retail spaces, as consumers do online research, then purchase in physical stores Social media and new local demand generating business models are driving increasing amounts of retail trafficThe changes are so far reaching and happening so fast that it requires all of us to innovate and think differently about commerce.
  • Technology is changing the way people shop! The days of a consumer going into a brick and mortar store have changed. Today, they may read online reviews while browsing racks, they may scan to comparison shop and ultimately they may make their purchase offline. Companies like Groupon have changed the consumers’ relationship with their merchants. People share their purchase decisions over the Internet before they buy. Entire blog subcultures have grown up with real people selling goods to their friends and followers. Consumers are taking full control of the buying experience in a world where the merchant used to have control. In “the new normal” the consumer transacts when they want, and on their terms, for the best deal.
  • A few months ago, we announced the creation of a new business within eBay called X.commerce, that brings together all Ebay Inc’s assets to give merchants access to developer innovations to help them grow their businesses and keep up with consumer demands. What assets am I talking about?eBay- world’s largest online marketplace. 25 million sellers worldwide and 200 million listings at any given time PayPal - $92BN in payment volume last year. 5 million transactions a day. $3,500 a secondMagento - a leading ecommerce platform services company that we have agreed to acquireGSI – another company we acquired that enables ecommerce, multichannel retailing and digital marketing for global enterprisesMilo – local shoppingWhere – location based services, including advertisingRedLaser – barcode scanning with mobile device Combined, we have 95 million active users, data and trends, payments, identity, inventory management, storefront capabilities, global reach, etc.
  • Developers are a critical to X.commerce; and we are committed to creating opportunities for developers to get their fair share of the $8T opportunity. As part of this echo system we have thriving developer community; There are more than 1,500 apps and more than 60,000 PayPal X developers. The Magento platform serves tens of thousands of merchants worldwide and is supported by a global community of solution partners and third-party developerThe eBay Developers Program was founded in 2000 and third-party software applications already accounts for over 25% of listingsAnd now, with X.commerce, we want to make developers the engine behind this commerce operating system that defines the new commerce landscape.
  • In the fall, you’ll hear much more about X.commerce and the opportunities we are creating for Developers at our first X.commerce developer conference in San Francisco.
  • I’m really excited about the potential … You can imagine what will happen when you consolidate the power eBay, PayPal, Magento and our Partners and open it to our developer networks to focus on a single goal … to help merchants grow.  Thank you again for your time today, and enjoy the rest of the conference.
