  • Thoughts of Google’s Eric Schmidt…Google chairman Eric Schmidt has said education in Britain is holdingback the countrys chances of success in the digital media economy. Hemade his comments at the MacTaggart Lecture at the EdinburghInternational Television Festival on 26th August 2011.•Dr Schmidt said that the UK needed to reignite childrens passion forscience, engineering and maths.•He said he had been flabbergasted to learn that computer science wasnot taught as standard in UK schools, despite what he called the"fabulous initiative" in the 1980s when the BBC not only broadcastprogrammes for children about coding, but shipped over a million BBCMicro computers into schools and homes.•"Your IT curriculum focuses on teaching how to use software, but givesno insight into how its made.
