The introduction to global informality will address the very basic of informal production energies. Informal housing solutions and informal economies owe their persistent existence not only to exogene forces, as to say the incapacity of formal provision, but also to its inner strength in flexibility and resource- optimization. Despite the apparent downside of informality towards health and environmental safety, there is much to learn from its creative and effectiveness. Therefore a journey through-out the world will help to illustrate the scope of urban informality and stimulate discussions how to use them for planning and design practices. ‘Informal Practices’ will be the central theme of Jaap Klaarenbeek’s lecture on the 18th. Jaap will show various instances of informality, the ‘magnitude’ of informality in São Paulo and the way it effects the city’s urban life and space. During the lecture several types and modes of informality will be distinghu- ished, as well as the way in which these practices emerged in São Paulo’s urban landscape, and the forms in which they use the urban space. In his lecture Jaap will shed a light on the tensions between formal and informal and the complex typologies they produce, as well as the symmetries and asymmetries between formal and informal‘worlds’in São Paulo. The invited lecturer has profound knowledge about the changing characteris- tics of public and private urban space. The envisioned lecture covers city related topics following a two-folded target. As urban space represents the interface of communication and all investigations it is crucial to bring participants nearer to the concept of it. The second part of the lecture block will deal with the role of urban planning in shaping urban space. With this insight participants whould understand the role of urban space and the formal ways planning it. Kees Konings will lecture about anthropological research methods: one of the alpha-sciences that investigates human behavior on a very local scale. The lecture is a follow-up on Maurice Harteveld’s lecture on urbanistic research methods. Since the 70’s, Kees Koonings has done on research on informality in South-East Asia, Africa and Latin America. He ran courses at the University of Utrecht. He is a guest-researcher at the CEDLA. He will use his experiences with on-site studies to explain how (urban) anthropologists perform their research and also shed a light on the core-theme’s that urban anthropologist’s research. Urban agriculture is a highly discussed aspect of urban informality. The activ- ity is an expression of the new emerging form of reciprocal urban-rural linkages and is estimated to be practiced by 800 million people worldwide. The poten- tial in urban agriculture lays not only in its poverty alleviation capacity but also to contribute to urban sustainability. The University ofWageningen is an impor- tant knowledge hub and addresses questions to what extent urban agriculture can be used as innovative strategy for sustainable land conservation in cities.
  5. 5. Delft University of Technology Portuguese Crash Course Monday 17:30 – 19:00 BK-BG.West.170 Workshops Saturday 14:00 – 20:00 tbc. The workshop will be devided into the two groups of videography and photography. Participants will have to opt for one. The video- and photowork- shop gives participants the chance to imporve their individual recording skills under the supervi- sion of experts. The urban complexities subject to the city space investigations will challenge participant’s capaci- ties to capture informal processes, intellectually but also in an informational way. A workshop will be organized with an expert into the field of Gps- based techniques. Participants will use traditional and unconventional recording technologies to test out tracking tools and are challenged to conceptu- alize new ones. 11.02 14.03 21.03 16.02 23.02 02.03 09.03 16.03 23.03 30.03 Course 1: Course 2: Course 3: Course 4: Course 5: Course 6: Course 7:
