Using the metric system

 1. 1. Measurement Using the Metric System in Science
 2. 2. Precision v. Accuracy

When an object is measured more than once, the measurements may vary. The closeness of a set of measured values to each other is called precision .

Many people confuse precision with accuracy. Accuracy is a measure of how close the values are to the actual value.

 3. 3. The English System

The system of measurement the United States uses.

Uses inches, feet, yards, and miles to measure length

Uses ounces and pounds to measure mass

Uses ounces and gallons to measure volume

 4. 4. The Metric System

The system of measurement used around the world not only in science but in everyday life. (Called Systeme Internationale…SI )

The metric system is based on multiples of ten, making it very easy to understand, once you learn the vocabulary.

A metric prefix indicates how many times a basic unit (meter, liter, or gram) should be multiplied or divided by ten.

 5. 5. English v. Metric Usage
 6. 6. Some Real-World Examples:

What does it mean when we say a lawyer makes 150K a year?

How do we express the storage capacity of a computer?

How do we describe the clarity of a digital camera?

How do we measure the daily vitamin allowances that should be in our diets?

 7. 7. Metric Conversions-changing from one amount to another.

You can use the metric prefixes to change from one length, mass, or volume to another in the metric system

You can use the acronym:

K ing H enry D ied… by… d rinking c hocolate m ilk

to help you with these conversions.

Each underlined letter represents a prefix and “by” represents the basic unit you are dealing with (gram, meter, liter)
