    3. www.techglobalinc.net Surface Capacitive touch Technology HOW SURFACE CAPACITIVE TOUCH SCREENS WORK Tech Global’s Surface Capacitive Touch Screens are an all-glass construction with greater than 9H Surface hardness able to withstand over 300 million touches. A transparent conductive ITO coating is evenly distributed over both sides of a glass substrate. An electrode pattern is precisely printed around the perimeter of the glass to accurately generate an alternating current over the top conductive layer. The touch of a conductive probe draws the current to the specific point of contact. The controller then calculates the location of the touch by evaluating the flow of current from each corner. This flow of current is proportional to the distance to the touch. The ITO coating on the back of the glass functions as a shield to protect against ESD and outside interference. With no mechanical movement and a 9H surface hardcoat, a capacitive touch screen can withstand 300 million touches. 12. Medical Solutions www.techglobalinc.net NEC Display Solutions is setting new standards with grayscale displays for filmless diagnostics, with technologies that are available for the first time in this market segment. This introduction of medical-grade displays is backed by years of experience in the development of TFT displays for professional use combined with intensive research done in the medical market. MultiSync MD Series grayscale displays – in combination with the appropriate graphics controller – are designed for diagnostic imaging and for use in Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) applications. Furthermore, diagnostic imaging displays from NEC Display Solutions are based on technologies and functions which actively contribute to a reduction of cost of ownership. Flexible areas of application and reduced service costs are just a few examples that contribute to cost reduction in healthcare. Large Screen for medical Imaging Healthcare environments that can benefit from the Large-Screen LCDs’ many high-performance features include operating rooms (consolidated patient vitals), surgery suites (review and preparation), emergency departments, training/teaching areas, patient monitoring (maternity wards) and general dynamic digital signage areas (pharmacy, flower shop, etc.). These displays, which feature a standard three-year limited warranty, can be integrated with keyboardless data entry with Tech Global’s touchscreen. Their flexibility for portability also is paramount as they can be easily mounted on rolling carts, eliminating the need to purchase a display for separate rooms. As if these benefits weren’t enough, the MultiSync Large-Screen LCD Series includes the revolutionary Digital Signage Technology Suite (DSTS), which boasts 20+ advanced features. These include: · Improved screen performance · Lower total cost of ownership · Enhanced display management Radiology/Diagnostic 2511 Technology Drive, Suite 107 Elgin, Illinois, 60124 T. 888.623.2004 F. 847.377.9182
    13. www.tec hglobalinc.net X-LightTM Technology X-Light, an NEC Display Solutions (NEC-DS) patented technology, has enabled the company to develop the only grayscale monitor that can control the backlight whitepoint of a cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) LCD monitor. Whitepoint Whitepoint is the color of a light emitted by a light source. Even though a light source may be considered white, it may not have identical whitepoint characteristics. The difference in whiteponit can easily be observed when comparing an incandescent light source (typical light bulb) and a fluorescent light. The incandescent light will appear more yellow to a typical observer, while the fluorescent light seems to have a more blue hue. One way to define color and intensity (brightness) is to use the CIE chromaticity diagram. Any color can be described by using X and Y for the color. The diagram shows the range of colors that humans can detect as well as the ranges of colors displayable on a monitor and printable on a printer. The x and y axes show values for the x and y chromaticity coordinates respectively. For example, a factory NEC MultiSync MD Series Clear-base monitor is x, y, of 0.292 ,0.321 L=400 cd/m2. CCFL Backlights Standard LCD monitors use a CCFL. CCFL lights whitepoint will vary in production lots. This means that two moni- tors may not look identical even though the light output is calibrated to the same luminance (intensity of light). Most standard CCFL-backlit monitors have x,y, (CIE) range for the white point of +/- 0.002. This may not seem like a great amount, but because the human eye is sensitive to color, the monitors will appear to be different. Since most grayscale monitors are used in pairs or multiple-monitor configurations, it is important that they have a similar appearance. In addition, as the monitor ages, the whitepoint of the monitor will shift towards a yellow hue. X-Light allows NEC-DS to adjust and keep the x,y (CIE) of the display whitepoint to +/- 0.002, a tenfold improvement. For example, a factory NEC MultiSync MD Series Clear-base monitor is x, y, of 0.292 ,0.321 L=400 cd/m2. 14. www.tec hglobalinc.net The above graph charts the aging of a typical CCFL backlight. As the monitor ages, the x,y (CIE ) changes towards a yellow spectrum. The graph at the right compares X-Light and standard CCFL as the monitors age. Internal Sensor Many grayscale monitors have an internal luminance sensor to monitor and adjust the monitor over the lifetime of the monitor. Typically, this is a simple luminance sensor that measures only the intensity of the light. NEC MultiSync MD Series displays’ internal sensor is a colorimeter that not only monitors the luminance but also monitors and adjusts the whitepoint. The sensor’s temperature also is monitored because its performance will change with temperature fluctua- tion. This function results in the monitor having a consistent appearance and performance over the life of the monitor. NEC MultiSync MD Series monitors have internal sensors for light and temperature that constantly monitor the output of the backlight - not only for luminance (intensity) but also for the whitepoint (color of the white). The temperature of the sensor is monitored and adjusted accordingly as it is affected by changes in temperature. The light is monitored after it has been mixed in the light guide plate for increased accuracy. Three-Color CCFL NEC-DS uses a patented three-color CCFL architecture and associated circuitry to control the color (whitepoint) of the backlight. By mixing three separate colors of CCFL and using an internal feedback loop, the luminance and whitepoint of the monitor can be controlled over the life of the monitor. X-Light Technology 2511 Technology Drive, Suite 107 Elgin, Illinois, 60124 T. 888.623.2004 F. 847.377.9182
    15. www.tec hglobalinc.net By using three colors of CCFL backlights and three inverters, the backlight whitepoint can be adjusted. X-Light measures and adjusts the backlight every 20ms using an internal calibration loop for consistent intensity and whitepoint. This allows for the gamma (DICOM) factory calibration to be held. Clear Base and Blue Base The whitepoint of NEC MultiSync MD Series monitors is set at the factory using a high-end color sensor. NEC-DS chose the whitepoint to be set at the CIE coordinates for existing CRT-based monitors using the p104 phosphor typically called clear base x=.292 y=.321 (approx. 8000° K). NEC-DS also has a blue- base model based on the p45 phosphor x=.265 y=.320 (approx. 14000° K). The choice of whitepoint depends on customer preference. Factory calibration is stored as the reference data in the mem- ory of the monitor. The internal color sensor and calibration loop uses this as the reference for adjustment. In theory the monitor should hold this calibration for the life of the monitor. If the monitor ever needs recalibration there are two ways to calibrate. Monitor match- ing and stand-alone DICOM-GSDF calibration using just the monitor and an external sensor. Monitor Matching Other medical display manufacturers match monitors at the factory by measuring every monitor after assembly and sorting them by white- point. The monitors are then sold in matched pairs. Since the electron- ics and panels in these monitors differ slightly with age, there is no guarantee that they will match over the life of the monitor. If there is a service issue, either both of the monitors must be replaced or the manufacturer must make sure that the replacement will match, using serial numbers and factory whitepoint measurement information. With X-Light, since all monitors have the same whitepoint, any monitor can easily be replaced. Even onsite replacement units can be stored and used for easy replacement and service. X-Light Technology 2511 Technology Drive, Suite 107 Elgin, Illinois, 60124 T. 888.623.2004 F. 847.377.9182
    16. www.tec hglobalinc.net With its built-in calibration and copy function, X-Light also allows the user to match monitors in the field if necessary. The monitor has standalone calibration (DICOM – GSDF) built into the firmware. By using an external sensor that connects directly to the monitor via a USB sensor port, the monitor can copy the characteristics (whitepoint, luminace, DICOM gamma) of another NEC-DS monitor. Summary The X-Light architecture allows for a stable and consistent grayscale monitor. With an adjustable whitepoint and sensor feedback loop, X-Light offers users of NEC MultiSync MD Series grayscale displays several advantages: • Stability of whitepoint/luminance and gamma (DICOM-GSDF) All NEC-DS grayscale monitors have identical whitepoint Will hold factory adjustment Internal feedback and stabilization system keeps set whitepoint and luminance during the life of the monitor • Ease of Service No whitepoint management based on the monitor serial number Can have extra monitor in storage for quick replacement This technology paper was published in and based on information as of May 2005.
