  • We know where you sleep… and can get as much information we want whenever we want about YOU. By: Michelle Dryjanski and Jay Timpani
  • For example…Bryan Weiser
  • Even shows his family members
  • www.pipl.com
    • What is it?
      • A website which is part of the “hidden web” and allows various companies, executives, or just people in general to search anything about a particular person, including siblings, income, profession, location, etc.
      • It is partnered with Intelius, which is the website it links to for more specific information about a person
      • Who would you want to search?
  • So what do you mean when you say the hidden web?
    • Also known as "invisible web", the term "deep web" refers to a vast repository of underlying content, such as documents in online databases that general-purpose web crawlers cannot reach. The deep web content is estimated at 500 times that of the surface web, yet has remained mostly untapped due to the limitations of traditional search engines.
  • Examples of web sites with ‘deep web content.”
  • How to search?
  • Results
  • Pipl’s business model
    • Sponsored links and results
    • Advertisements linked to background-report providers
  • What’s so special about pipl?
    • Since most personal profiles, public records and other people-related documents are stored in databases and not on static web pages, most of the higher-quality information about people is simply "invisible" to a regular search engine, like google search and yahoo search
    • Unlike a typical search-engine, Pipl is designed to retrieve information from the deep web, the automated software is set to interact with searchable databases and extract facts, contact details and other relevant information from personal profiles, member directories, scientific publications, court records and numerous other deep-web sources.
    • Have you ever googled your name?
  • Who uses pipl.com?
    • Commitment to Children's Privacy
      • Pipl is committed to protecting the privacy of young children. To comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, at this time, Pipl is only available to users who are at least 13 years old .
    • Companies who want to hire people for employment
    • Stalking people aka finding information on people you are curious about
      • Have you ever searched someone because you were just curious?
  • Is this website free?
    • To do a common search for a particular person it is free
    • But…to get more details on the person, such as income, address, neighbors, marriage details, etc. you do have to pay
    • For 0.95 it only includes a people search report
      • Full Name, Address, Age, & DOB, Phone Number, Relatives, Address, History, Avg. Income, and Home Value
    • For $14.95 you can have unlimited people search reports by name or address for 24 hours.
      • Full Name, Address, Age, & DOB, Phone Number, Relatives, Address, History, Avg. Income, and Home Value
    • For $39.95 you can have a background check on the person
      • Full Name, Address, Age, & DOB, Phone Number, Relatives, Address, History Avg., Income Property,, Criminal, Check, Bankruptcies, Liens, Judgments, Aliases, Lawsuits, Neighbors, Death Records, Marriage, and Divorce
  • Here is what the page looks like to pay…
  • Spokeo.com
    • A competitor of pipl.com
      • At spokeo.com you have to pay but you can put your gmail, hotmail, yahoo, or aol account and then it sends you an email with the friends it found from your account
      • Internationally, spokeo.com has more users with 2.38 million viewers, but in the U.S. pipl has more users.
  • Spokeo.com
  • Emailfinder.com
    • Emailfinder only allows you to search for people’s emails but you have to pay $1.95 per month for a year or $14.95 for immediate results found
  • Interesting Facts:
    • Going by ComScore’s December numbers:
    • Pipl is leading in the US with 557K unique users to Spock’s 260K, but is trailing internationally with 1.35M uniques to Spock’s 2.38M.
    • How has Pipl pulled this off?
    • Matthew Hertz, the company CEO, says their marketing “it’s mostly word-of-mouth. It’s a simple answer but it rings true. Just take it out for a spin and you’ll see why—it’s just good. In fact it’s so good it’ll probably scare some people’s pants off when they see what information it is able to—legally—drudge up.”
  • Should we be concerned about Privacy on the web?
    • Yes.
    • Is your information safe?
    • The truth is no because we voluntarily put information that is made public.
    • Can also be useful though correct? Catch up with an old friend or business partner.
  • You thought Pipl was weird enough…..
  • So what does this all mean?
    • WATCH WHAT YOU PUT UP ON THE WEB!!!!!!
    • The information that you put up can and will be used against you.
    • So don’t think you can post crazy Facebook pictures for no one to see. They don’t even need to be your friend to see you information.
  • Questions??
    • Tell me what you think about pipl.com?
    • Are you nervous?
    • Have you ever heard of it before or any other websites like this?
