1. Important Information About Your Child’s Safety
Drawstrings on jackets, sweatshirts and other clothing items
pose a danger to your child.
They can become snagged on school bus handrails or doors, on playground equipment, on escalators or other
mechanical equipment. Incidents of snagged drawstrings or toggles have resulted in injuries and even deaths.
We don’t want this to happen to any of our passengers.
Information campaigns by the Product Bureau (Health Canada), Canadian Children’s
Apparel Manufacturing Association, and Safe Kids Canada have caused many
clothing manufacturers to eliminate drawstrings from their clothing. But some still
remain. We at Laidlaw, in conjunction with your school officials, urge you to inspect
all of your children’s existing clothing and eliminate these hazards wherever possible.
The simplest solution is to either remove or cut all drawstrings from the clothing.
