Web development is undergoing an exuberant renaissance, as new technologies reveal the promise of the internet as a real software platform. Yet this evolution has been accompanied by a marked lack of experimentation and visual sophistication in user interfaces. I suggest that this is due to a cultural shift amongst designers and decision-makers, which promotes functionalism and emphasizes quantitative methods of making design decisions over visual research. I propose an alternate model of interface design practice, in which iterative visual exploration, qualitative user research, and agile development techniques can work together to produce noticeably enjoyable user experiences.
