The Red Hot Chili Peppers are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1983. The groups musical style primarily consists of rock with an emphasis on funk, as well as elements from other genres such as punk rock, metal, and psyched.The Red Hot Chili Peppers have won seven Grammy Awards and sold over 65 million albums worldwid rock. The bands original line-up featured guitarist Hillel Slovak and drummer Jack Irons. Because of commitments to other bands, the two did not play on the debut album, The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Cliff Martinez was the drummer for the first two records, and guitarist Jack Sherman played on the first album only. The line-up of Flea, Kiedis, Frusciante and Smith was the longest-lasting, and recorded five studio albums starting with 1989s Mothers Milk. In 1990, the group signed with Warner Bros. The band
HistoryThe Red Hot Chili Pepperswere formed bysinger AnthonyKiedis, guitarist HillelSlovak, bassist Flea anddrummer Jack Irons, whilethey attended Fairfax HighSchool in Los Angeles.Theirfirst performance was at theRhythm Lounge to a crowd ofapproximately 30people, opening for Gary andNeighbors Voices.
The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 14, 2012 by actor/comedian, Chris Rock, who is a longtime friend and fan of the band. The induction line-up was Kiedis, Flea, Smith, Klinghoffer, Frusciante, Slovak, Irons and Martinez. Despite recording one album with the band, Dave Navarro and Jack Sherman were the only two former recording band members not inducted for reasons unknown. They performed four songs, including "By the Way", "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie" and "Give it Away", which included Irons and Martinez on drums,it was the first time Kiedis and Flea had performed with Irons in 24 years and Martinez in 26 years. To end the ceremony, the band was joined by George Clinton, Slash, Billie Joe Armstrong, Tre Cool, Ronnie Wood and Kenny Jones for a performance of "Higher Ground“. Recognition
Return of FruscianteIn the years following hisdeparture from the band, itbecame public that JohnFrusciante had developed aheroin addiction, which lefthim in poverty and neardeath. Frusciante had lostcontact with most of hisfriends. However, Flea alwaysremained in contact, and hehelped talk Frusciante intoadmitting himself to LasEncinas Drug RehabilitationCenter in January 1998. Heconcluded the process inFebruary of that year andbegan renting a smallapartment.
