• Global temperatures are rising. There is growing awareness that our climate is changing… some are already directly affected. And most of us are starting to be seriously worried. In their report on climate change released February 2, 2007, the UN Intergovernmental Panel pointed to CO2 emission as the main cause of climate change. At the same time, supplies of fossil fuels are dwindling. Some of the world’s major economies are increasingly having to rely on imported fuels, sometimes from regions where conflict and political instability threaten the security of that supply. These unstable conditions are reflected in the fluctuating and unpredictable price of conventional energy supplies. Estimates from the International Energy Agency (IEA) predict that by 2030 the world’s energy needs will be 60% greater than present levels. This is especially true in booming economies like China and India, where population growth is also a contributing factor. According to the United Nations, the world's population will increase by another nearly 2 billion within the first 25 years of this century. It is an indisputable fact that energy demand is rising – CLICK FOR NEXT SLIDE
• … .and the climate change challenge is one of the most serious challenges mankind has ever faced. The forecasted effects could be devastating. It is time to re-think our energy future
• By working with…see above (this slide is also the agenda for the presentation)
• Under the “As green as it gets” , principle Vestas has stepped up its efforts to minimise the consumption of resources. Cost of energy also has to do with cost of nature: In addition to this and as announced in the yearly report technology are actively working with reducing the weight of the turbine (less resources pr produced kWh) and increasing the recycling percentage Life cycle assessment : Since 1999, Vestas has worked with Life Cycle Assessments, whose purpose is to: - Document the environmental performance of Vestas wind turbines - Use the results to develop wind turbines that have less impact on the environment compared to today - If you take into account the full lifecycle of the turbine then 5-8 g of CO2 is emitted pr kWh . compared to World average coal 909 g/kWh . - Average European electricity has a much higher impact on global warming than electricity from Vestas turbines
• In terms of reducing CO2 emissions, wind power is currently the best, cleanest option. The supply is unlimited – and it’s free. In addition, substantial capacity can be built up quickly, offering the energy independence demanded by the world's fastest growing economies.
• During its lifetime turbines will save the world from 100,000 of CO2 compared to traditional energy production. That equals the annual co2 emissions from 42 500 cars (calculations based on European co2 emissions) On this slide 432 cars
• All Vestas companies must renegotiate the electricity contract and ensure that 100% of the electricity purchased comes from renewable energy sources when possible. Reason why not 100% is because we cannot purchase renewable energy in China LEED platinum is the highest internationally recognized green building certification you can get in USA LEED is a system , providing third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts. Vehicle Policy All company cars purchased or leased after 1 st October 2008 must be diesel-powered with particle filter. Objective: to include environmental and climate focus and considerations when choosing company vehicles. This may involve an initial increased investment but also cost savings during the operation due to the higher efficiency of the fuel used. During 2009 Vestas have tested to use solar panels for the aviation lights instead of diesel generators on a site I NEU. This until the electrical connection can be done. The investments in solar panel will be covered by the savings from diesel consumption
