Step 1: Consider the Question…

Step 2: Brainstorm Answers
In small groups, make a list of answers

Step 3: Write One Idea Per Sheet Write your idea here. Use large and clear printing.

Step 4: Give Idea Sheets to Staff
Staff will post ideas around the room

Step 5: Fill Dots to Record Opinions

Fill in one dot per a sheet to record your opinion … then sign on the right

Optionally write a brief comment below

You may dot as many or as few sheets as you please.

Step 6: Report the Results
Announce some of the top ideas
Post all results on the web page

Step-by-Step Process
Hosting Organization:
What is the question to addressed?
Who will be participating?
What information do they need?
What will be done with the results?

1. Learn about the issue.
distribute a primer booklet
host an introductory lesson on the topic
present a video

2. Present the issue and question(s).

3. Discuss potential answers.

4. Write ideas on Dotmocracy sheets.

5. Fill dots to record opinions. Write comments.
Repeat steps 3 through 5. Participants review ideas, discuss comments & dotting patterns, & post new ideas to be dotted.

6. Report the results.

7. Announce a decision.
Author plan that selects, combines, prioritizes, and/or finds compromise among the popularly agreed-upon ideas, with minimal disagreement.

Rules
The official Dotmocracy facilitator(s) are authoritative and responsible for the Dotmocracy process, but maintain neutral opinions on the session’s content.
Each participant may only fill in one dot per Dotmocracy sheet.
Participants must sign each sheet that they dot.
Participants may dot as many or as few sheets as they please during the session.
There are no changes to an idea's text inside the idea box once dotting has started on that sheet.
Participants have the right to keep their dotting choices secret and their comments anonymous.
A Dotmocracy sheet should only be removed from the dotting process by the official facilitator(s).

Required Posted Information
The basic process instructions.
The preamble and references to any related information materials.
The question(s) to be addressed.
An explanation of where and when a copy of the complete results will be accessible.
A statement describing how the results will be used by the hosting organization(s).
The hosting organization(s) name and contact details.
The official facilitator(s) name and contact details.
