The most commonly heard of, the giant panda, was given the scientific name Ailuropoda melanoleuca. The red panda has the scientific name Ailurus fulgens.
Pandas are only found in the undisturbedmountain forests of some parts of centralChina. Their habitat is the bamboo forests ofsouthwest China 4,000 to 12,000 ft abovesea level.
Their food source consists almost exclusively of bamboo. To gain the nourishment the panda needs to survive, it will eat anywhere up to 20 or 30 pounds of bamboo shoots in one day. Bamboo contains very little nutritional value, so pandas must eat alot.
