  1. 1. EvaluationJasmine Pointer
  2. 2. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? My front cover is quote conventional because the sell lines are around the sides and atthe bottom of the cover image which covers the whole page. The masthead is at the topof the cover and in the centre. However the letters are spaced out across the top insteadof being in one corner as a whole word. I’ve done this to make it stand out more andcreate something different on the page as it doesn’t include a lot and apart from thecover image this is it’s main feature. The barcode is at the side of the page instead of inthe bottom corner. I have used block capitals for all the text which front covers ofmagazines tend to do. The contents page is quite simple. I only have one image on thecontents whereas most magazines have at least 4. I have put the text with the pagenumbers on the right and left aligned it. I got the idea for the layout of the text fromKerrang’s contents design. To make the contents page more interesting I added fonts ofmusical notes and guitars along the bottom and on the top. For the double page spread Ihave used one whole landscape image as the background and added my text on top. Thetext is on top of rectangular shapes to help it to stand out. I have added a quote on thepage as magazine interviews tend to do. Again I have added fonts of musical notes and aguitar to make it more interesting and to fill spaces. Jasmine Pointer
  3. 3. How does your media product represent particular social groups? My main feature in the magazine is a young new singer called Danielka who is 16 years oldalthough her age isn’t mentioned. The front cover image portrays a silly, careless characteras she is sticking her tongue out. Also, in the other images she is on a swing in the park. These represent her as young and carefree. In the interview her language portrays her agegroup as she isn’t too posh or formal although she doesn’t talk improperly. Considering theage group of the audience that the magazine is aimed at, the types of artists featured arestereotypically what they listen to. Also what she is wearing in the picture may be only thekind of thing that someone from her age group would wear. Jasmine Pointer
  4. 4. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?A printing industry. For example Bauer Media. Bauer Media is a division of the BauerMedia Group. It is headquartered in Germany. The Group is a worldwide media empirewhich offers over 300 magazines in 15 countries. It was founded in 1875. Their magazineheritage goes back to 1953 with the launch of Angling Times. Some of their brands areCloser, Empire, Grazia, Heat, Kerrang, Kiss, Q, BOX television and many more.Kerrang and Q are both magazines that I have got my inspiration from for my magazinewhich makes them similar in layout. Therefore Bauer would be the kind of mediainstitution to distribute my magazine. Jasmine Pointer
  5. 5. Who would be the audience for your media product? The audience of my magazine would mostly be people from 13-25 as it is based onmusic that is in the charts or well known to those of that age group. Although peopleover 25 may listen to the music I feature in the magazine they may not want to buy amagazine on it. However a teenager probably would as they have the most disposableincome to spend on things like magazines. Also, teenagers are more interested in musicgossip and new music breakthroughs and have the time to read about it. Jasmine Pointer
  6. 6. How did you attract/address your audience?A young singer is featured and people from the age group 13-25 will be from a similar oneto hers and be able to relate to the answers in the interview on the double page spread. The layout also appeals to the age group as the front cover image isn’t very serious. Thecompetition featured also appeals to people of this age group as it is a festival for singersin the charts which teenagers and young adults are more likely to listen to and want towin tickets for. The picture fonts used also make it look like a magazine more for this agegroup as they are music related and decorative which teenagers care about more. Theinterview isn’t a serious conversation and the language used appeals to people of the agegroup it is aimed at. Jasmine Pointer
  7. 7. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? In this project I used Adobe Photoshop to create the magazine and to edit photos. Fromthis I have learnt how to use Adobe Photoshop a lot better than I did before and how touse tools such as eraser tools and the clone stamp. I have learnt how to set up the pageto the size to make a magazine and how to use layers to layout everything on the page. Ican use the text tool better and know how to create warped text. I have discovered ablog website called Wordpress and learnt how to use it to create posts on my magazineand how to edit them if necessary. I have also needed to download fonts for mymagazine and to do this I used dafont.com which allows you to download fonts for freeand add them to your computer fonts. Jasmine Pointer
  8. 8. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? In the first task I only used publisher to create it which I already knew quite well and didn’tlearn much more that was different. But in the music magazine I had to use Photoshop tocreate it which I wasn’t very familiar with. After this project I know how to use it a lot betterand can use the tools well. I have even downloaded it onto my home computer to use. Ihave used new fonts from the internet whereas in the other magazine I used fonts alreadyon the computer. I put more effort into the photos I took and went out to take them to getbetter backgrounds in the image. I have learnt from research more about music magazinessuch as NME whereas before I was only researching college magazines from students likeme. Jasmine Pointer
