  • Benefits of the fiber behavior information 5 In this graph is shown how much five typical hardwood market pulps differ. They are all refined equally (100kWh/ton). The comparison is made to find the pulp which enables the highest tear strength and opacity at the same time. Key point is that the fibers differ and their prices differ, the key question is how to capitalize on that.

  • 8 In this example “Euca original recipe” shows similar strength properties with “Euca New recipe” but with 4mm less board thickness. Producer don’t want to increase thickness Technical customer service question is, can the Euca1 used by the producer be replaced with Euca3 ?
  • 9 After the optimization done for the board recipe “Euca new recipe” even better overall strength properties than the original mix with less thickness Modifications done in order to reach the quality window was following: 1) Refining for the the Euca3 pulp in top and bottom layers was increased from 50 kWh/ton to 90 kWh/ton 2) Refining for the middle layer was increased for the RCF fibers from 40 kWh/ton to 50 kWh/ton 3) Top and bottom layer grammages was decreased from 20 g/m2 to 18 g/m2 4) Middle layer grammage was increased from 80 g/m2 to 84 g/m2
  • 10 After the quality optimization economical comparisons are as easy as they are for basic furnish mixes as well In this case it was possible to achieve even better quality properties than it was possible to reach with original board mix Based on the economical evaluation new board mix could offer 7,5 € cheaper production costs

  • 12 In this example “Euca original recipe” shows almost similar quality than “Euca New recipe” Technical customer service question is, can producer increase the coating layer grammage and use less virgin fibers on the top and bottom layers, with same quality performance In “Euca new recipe”
  • 13 After the changes done for the coating and virgin fiber grammage “Euca new recipe” showed still exactly the same overall quality Modifications done in order to reach the quality window was following: 1) Coating layer grammage was increased from 20 g/m2 to 22 g/m2 2) Top and bottom layer grammages were decreased from 20 g/m2 to 19 g/m2 3) Refining for the the Euca pulp in top and bottom layers was increased from 50 kWh/ton to 80 kWh/ton
  • 14 After the quality optimization economical comparisons are as easy as they are for basic furnish mixes as well In this case it was possible to increase the the amount of coating and reduce the amount of virgin fiber use in a mix Based on the economical evaluation new board mix could offer 3,66 € cheaper production costs for a ton
