  3. 3. Founded in 1999, the ALS Therapeutic Development Institute has become the world's premier biotechnology company dedicated to ending ALS, which is commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The organization's professionals adopt creative strategies in their extensive investigations into gene therapy, research biology, and biomarkers.
  4. 4. In late 2012, the ALS Therapeutic Development Institute enhanced its capabilities by partnering with another nonprofit biomedical research group, the Gladstone Institutes, to study how experimental pharmaceuticals affect human models of ALS. The modeling process, which puts ALS patient skin cells into pluripotent stem cells and programs them into neurons, won Gladstone senior investigator Dr. Shinya Yamanaka the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
