The Second Commandment <ul><li>“ Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them…” (Exodus 20:4-5) </li></ul>
  4. 4. The Second Commandment What Does It Mean? <ul><li>“ Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth…” </li></ul><ul><ul><li>A graven image is usually defined as a wooden or stone carving of an idol, or just about any tangible representation of the idol. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Essentially, it is being said that one should not worship an interpretation or tangible symbol of God, and worship him, and him only. </li></ul></ul>
  5. 5. The Second Commandment What Does It Mean? <ul><li>“ Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them…” </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Even though you are not suppose to so much as create these false idols, you should especially not worship them. </li></ul></ul>

What Are False Idols? <ul><li>False idols are usually associated with anything worshipped that is not based within the supreme being(s) in an individual’s chosen religion. </li></ul><ul><li>Anything that distracts an individual away from their religion and their morals and values. </li></ul>
  7. 7. False Idols: Biblical Times <ul><li>During Biblical Times the term “false idols” were applied more to the beliefs of individuals who did not change their beliefs. </li></ul>
  8. 8. False Idols: Present Day <ul><li>Today’s False Idols have a much broader application: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Money </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Social Networking </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Cars </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Athletes </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Hollywood Stars </li></ul></ul>

Money <ul><li>Have you ever seen someone obsessed with money? </li></ul><ul><ul><li>What were the “important” things to them? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Were they focused on their religion or morals or values? </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>How does money change an individual’s life? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Did they let money come between them and family or friends? </li></ul></ul></ul>

Social Networking <ul><li>Twitter </li></ul><ul><li>Facebook </li></ul><ul><li>Texting </li></ul><ul><li>Emails </li></ul><ul><li>Tumblr </li></ul><ul><li>DailyBooth </li></ul><ul><li>How many of these do you use? </li></ul><ul><li>How often? </li></ul><ul><li>Do you ever let them take priority over other things? (Like homework?) </li></ul><ul><li>Are these helping you in any way? </li></ul>

Cars <ul><li>Cars are often worshiped by people. </li></ul><ul><li>They are seen as status symbols. </li></ul><ul><li>What is the purpose for owning a super fancy, expensive car? </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Keep in mind the original purpose of the automobile, to get people from Point A to Point B. </li></ul></ul>

Athletes <ul><li>While it is okay to see athletes as an inspiration, it is not okay to idolize them. </li></ul><ul><li>They are human, therefore they make errors as well. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>They make mistakes and bad choices. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>You can not trust them to lead you in a morally correct direction, as they are just as open to temptation as anyone else. </li></ul></ul>

Hollywood Stars <ul><li>Hollywood stars and pop culture are worshiped by many teens and young adults. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>How many of you look to, or previously looked to, a celebrity as your role model? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>How many of you have seen corruption in the world of Hollywood? </li></ul></ul>
  14. 14. Why Should We Avoid Abuse of These Idols <ul><li>Overall, these idols lead us away from our morals and values - intentionally or not. </li></ul><ul><li>The only way to avoid being mislead is to be aware of the way you use these, and to not be obsessive over them. </li></ul><ul><li>As long as we focus on our own beliefs, our morals, our values, and do not let these “false idols” lead us away from what we believe. </li></ul>
