  3. 3. Stage 1- Egg <ul><li>The butterfly begins its life as an egg. </li></ul><ul><li>Egg is the size of a pin head </li></ul><ul><li>Pale green with 12-14 ridges </li></ul>

Stage 2 – Larvae (caterpillar) <ul><li>Black with yellow-green stripes and long spines </li></ul><ul><li>It has 6 true legs and 10 prolegs to help it move </li></ul><ul><li>The caterpillar eats a lot and grows quickly </li></ul><ul><li>The caterpillar spins a silk button to attache itself upside-down to a twig or leaf and forms a J. </li></ul>
  5. 5. Stage 3 – Pupa (chrysallis) <ul><li>*Reddish brown pupa </li></ul><ul><li>*Inside the pupa, the caterpillar takes about 10 days to change into a butterfly. </li></ul><ul><li>*A fully-grown adult butterfly emerges from the chrysalis. </li></ul>

It also has six legs, however only four are used. </li></ul><ul><li>The butterfly also has two eyes made up of 10,000 lenses. </li></ul><ul><li>The butterfly’s tongue is known as a proboscis . It is used to drink nectar. </li></ul><ul><li>A butterfly can also hear with its two antennae attached to its head. </li></ul><ul><li>· A butterfly tastes through its feet and breaths through the side of its body. </li></ul>
