    Plate Tectonics Vocabulary - Presentation Transcript

    1. Pangaea The ancient (225 million years ago) supercontinent that split apart into the continents we know today.
    2. Continental Drift The theory used to explain the movement of the continents on earth. It was first proposed by Alfred Wegner less than 100 years ago (1912)
    3. Plate Boundaries The term “plate boundary” refers to the edges where the different plates on earth are touching. Each of the plates have a name .
    4. Types of Plate Boundaries Convergent: areas of plates that are moving toward each other Divergent – areas of plates that are moving away from each other Transform – areas of plates that are sliding past each other
    5. Convergent Boundaries There are several types of convergent boundaries: Continental vs. Oceanic results in drastic subduction and volcanoes Oceanic vs. Oceanic results in deep sea-floor trenches Continental vs. Continental results in huge mountain-building
