  • 1. Harry the Dirty Dog by Gene Zion Harry was a white dog with black spots who loved everything, except for baths… Harry heard the bathtub being filled with water one day, so he took the scrub brush and buried it in the yard…. Harry ran away from home, and had one dirty adventure after another as he played around the town all day long while changing from a white dog with black spots to a black dog with white spots because he was so filthy... Harry became hungry and tired, and he began to worry that his family might think that he had run away for good… Harry returned home, but his family didn’t recognize the “strange” black dog with white spots in their back yard… Harry did all of the tricks that he knew to try to get his family to recognize him; he had almost given up hope when he had an idea… The “soapiest” bath Harry had ever had washed away all of the dirt from his adventurous day, and proved to the family that Harry had returned. Harry overcomes his hatred of baths to reunite with his family after a day of dirty escapades and changes back to a white dog with black spots. Harry ran to the spot in the yard where he had buried the brush, dug it up, and ran upstairs into the bathtub… Harry sat up and begged in the tub with the scrub brush in his mouth until the family decided to give the “strange” dog a bath…
