  • This is so education even for a Chinese, James. The Chinese also believe that we become one year older after eating Tang Yuan. Tang Yuan can now be eaten all year round as you can easily buy them ready made in supermarkets. Just drop them into a pot of boiling water with ginger and sugar added to taste. They are ready when they float to the surface.

  • 2. Lantern Festival <ul><li>The Chinese Lantern Festival ( Yuan Xiao Jie ) is on 15th day of the 1 st Lunar month </li></ul><ul><ul><li>the first lunar month is called “ yuan ”-month </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>years ago the word for ‘night’ was “ xiao .” </li></ul></ul>
  • 3. Yuan Xiao Jie <ul><li>First full moon of the year, so </li></ul><ul><li>yuan (round) </li></ul><ul><li>xiao (night) </li></ul><ul><li>jie (festival) </li></ul>
  • 4. The first lantern festival <ul><li>The Jade Emperor in Heaven was angry at a town for killing his favorite goose. </li></ul>
  • 5. <ul><li>He planned to destroy the town with fire storm. </li></ul>
  • 6. <ul><li>For protection, a fairy told the town to put lanterns all over the town to make it look like it is burning. </li></ul>
  • 7. The town puts up lanterns to fool the Jade Emperor. <ul><li>He saw the “fire” and believed the people suffered enough, so he stopped the firestorm early . </li></ul>
  • 8. Now, people celebrate survival by carrying lanterns outside that night.
