Slide 4: innovation = originality S tep T w o D E S IG N S + impact The Intranet Innovation Awards are unique in recognising individual improvements to intranets, not sites as a whole. Winners show how new approaches to designing and delivering intranets can help staff and deliver real value to organisations. These awards are about sharing ideas for the benefit of all intranet teams.

Slide 6: How the awards are judged S tep T w o D E S IG N S Criteria Description Originality 30% How is the submission innovative? Submissions should demonstrate new ideas or innovative approaches. While ideas do not need to be unique, they should show an uncommon or original approach. Staff impact 30% How has the innovation changed the way staff or the organisation work? Submissions must show how they have directly changed the way common tasks or business processes are done. More than just being of novelty value, innovative approaches help to reshape the organisation. Organisational 40% How has the innovation tangibly or measurably benefited the organisation? benefits Submissions must demonstrate the direct organisational value or benefits that were delivered as a result of the new functionality or content. This may be measured quantitatively (in dollar terms), or qualitatively (describing how the innovation has delivered improvements).
Slide 7: S tep T w o D E S IG N S Six tips for winning an award in 2008
Slide 8: Read last year’s winners S tep T w o D E S IG N S A great starting is to read through the entries from the inaugural awards held in 2007. This will help you to understand what the judges are looking for, as well as identifying where you can do better! Read more: Summary of 2007 winners Article on the winning entries Full details on all winners
Slide 9: Focus on innovation S tep T w o D E S IG N S These awards are about new ideas, or good ideas implemented in interesting ways. Even small improvements to intranets count. Submissions to the awards don’t have to be unique, but they should demonstrate uncommon approaches that will be of value to other teams. (‘Best practice’ projects such as user- centered intranet redesigns are great, but aren’t innovative.)
Slide 10: Deliver benefits S tep T w o D E S IG N S Innovation is about new ideas put into practice. To win an award, you should therefore focus on the outcome, not on the technology that went into it. All the winners of the Intranet Innovation Awards have helped staff to do their jobs, as well as delivering benefits for the organisation. (Even projects with little or no technology can be innovative.)
Slide 11: Tell a story S tep T w o D E S IG N S Help us to understand what you have done, and why it is innovative. Communicate the organisational need, the work done, and the benefits delivered. Talk about roadblocks overcome, lessons learnt, and tips for other teams. The awards are about improvements that have made a difference, to staff or the organisation. So make us excited!
Slide 12: Provide evidence S tep T w o D E S IG N S If you can demonstrate clear business value, you’re in a good position to win an award. Last year’s Platinum entry from Fiat talked about benefits in millions of Euros. Even if you can’t specify benefits in dollars, find other forms of evidence: usage, before and after, time saved, examples, testimonials from staff. Anything that shows that things are better due to the innovative idea.
Slide 13: Don’t be shy! S tep T w o D E S IG N S You don’t have to work for a huge organisation or have a big team to win an innovation award. Even intranets wrestling the fundamentals often have at least a few ideas worthy of celebration. Remember, it’s the impact that counts, not the cost or size. If in doubt, submit your idea! You could join the list of organisations from across the globe that have won an Intranet Innovation Award.
