Group Discussion Do you use social media sites? Facebook Twitter Blogs How often do you use these social media websites? How do you use those social media websites? Keep in touch with friends? News gathering? Voicing your opinion? Other reasons?
Social Media Social media websites like Twitter and Facebook have blown up and have become huge parts of people’s everyday lives. Millions of people use blogs or micro blogs to get their voice out there on many different topics.  These social media sites have both good and bad qualities that should be taken notice of.
Facebook Facts More than 500 million active users More than 35 million update their status everyday More than 3 billion photos uploaded in a month More than 1.5 million local business have active Pages on Facebook About 70 % of Facebook users are outside the United States
Pro’s of Social Media Great way to stay in touch Old friends Co-workers Possible employers  Good campaign tool Ten Great Facebook Campaigns  Doritos “Scream Cheese”  Obama’s use of social media in 2008 election The Internet’s Role in campaign 2008 Great way to get your voice heard through blogs and micro blogs like twitter
Con’s of Social Media Over sharing of information Nothing you put online is private Heavy dependence on social media Constant need to check for updates/can’t detach from social media People can create fake identities online Hard to tell what's real and fake Facebook song Sexual Predators Chatroulette
5 stages of Facebook grief Confusion: What is it? What is it used for? Discovery: Find old friends, reading what they say on news feed makes you feel connected. Utility: Can use it for jobs and a more convenient form of communication compared to email, phone calls, etc. Embarrassment: Too much personal information is put up  Withdrawal: Realization nothing is private, diminished use of Facebook or account deletion
Online Safety When you agree to Terms of Service or Privacy Policies you give websites consent to use your information  Commercial information for advertisements Governmental information  Best thing is to watch what you post online Nothing is private online Once something is put online, it can never be fully removed
Conclusion Social media websites are a great way to keep in touch with friends, get your voice out there, and to use as a campaign tool Users should be careful on what they put up online though Things are not as private as they seem and nothing on the internet ever fully goes away
