  • 2. What does it mean to monitor?
    • Monitoring is when you stop to make sure you understand what you are reading.
    • Monitoring focuses on making sure you understand by asking yourself, “What did I just read?”
  • 3. What does it mean to clarify?
    • Clarifying is when you make the meaning of the text clear.
    • Clarifying is when you use specific strategies to figure out the meaning of what you’re reading.
  • 4. When do you monitor and clarify?
    • You can monitor and clarify during reading.
    • You can monitor and clarify after reading.
    • In other words, monitor and clarify during and after reading!
  • 5. How do you monitor and clarify?
    • Ask yourself if what you are reading makes sense.
    • Could you explain it to someone else?
    • If not, skim or read it again!
    • Look at any pictures or diagrams for clues.
    • Try explaining it to yourself or someone else.
  • 6. Questions to help you monitor and clarify!
    • What is the main idea?
    • What clues and details make you think so?
    • Does that make sense?
    • Does this text remind you of anything you already know?
  • 7. Your turn to monitor and clarify!
    • Let's brush our hair before we go to bed,
    • I say to the old friend who lives in my mirror.
    • I remember how I'd brush my mother's hair
    • Before she bobbed it. How long has it been
    • Since I hit my funnybone? had a scab on my knee?

  • 8. Now it’s your turn to monitor and clarify!
    • Turn to a partner and discuss the poem.
    • Be sure to monitor and clarify your understanding of the poem.
    • Remember, monitor/clarify is a way of making sure you understand what you read.

    • Monitor and clarify - the reader asks questions during and after reading.
    • Monitor and clarify - a way to check for understanding.
    • Monitor and clarify - using strategies (like asking yourself questions) to help you understand what you’ve read.
