  2. 2. Standard Indicator <ul><li>6.3.17 </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Recognize and describe that energy is a property of many objects and is associated with heat, light, electricity, mechanical motion, and sound. </li></ul></ul>
  3. 3. Defintions <ul><li>Energy-a quantity describing the amount of work that can be performed by a force. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>1. Light Energy–Any form of light contains energy. The energy in light often gets converted into thermal energy. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>2. Thermal Energy–The energy contained within a substance due to the movement of molecules. If something feels hot or cold to the touch you know that you have just experienced the transfer of thermal energy from one object to another (heat). </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>3. Chemical Energy–The energy associated with the chemical bonds between elements. Chemical energy is a stored energy that can be released. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>4. Sound Energy–Any audible or inaudible sound demonstrates sound energy. It is the energy associated with the vibrations of molecules and atoms. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>5. Kinetic Energy–The energy associated with the movement of objects. Anything that is moving has kinetic energy. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>6. Elastic Energy–Anything that can stretch and come back to its original shape is considered elastic. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>7. Electrical Energy–The energy associated with the separation and movement of charged particles called electrons. </li></ul></ul>
  4. 4. Background Information <ul><li>The Law of the Conservation of Energy states: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>“ Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It is merely transformed into another form of energy. The total amount of energy during the transference remains the same.” </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Noether’s Theorem </li></ul></ul></ul>
  5. 5. Questions to Consider <ul><li>What is the earth’s greatest source of energy? </li></ul><ul><li>What types of energy does this source produce? </li></ul><ul><li>How do you think the human body uses and stores energy? </li></ul><ul><li>What are some things that we use energy for? </li></ul>

Research <ul><li>Basic forms of transference: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Chemical to light (battery to light bulb) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Electrical to light (outlet to light bulb) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Chemical to sound (battery to radio) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Electrical to sound (outlet to television) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Chemical to kinetic (battery to car) </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Can you name some other types of energy transference? </li></ul>

What About US? <ul><li>The human body stores and uses energy in units called calories. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>No more than 1500 to 2000 total calories are recommended for intake per day. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>These calories are taken in the form of oxygen and food molecules (mostly carbohydrates and fats). </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>We also burn these calories through movement and exercise. EVERYTHING we do burns calories, just not a lot of them. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>A daily exercise regimen is recommended to keep a consistent 1500 to 2000 calorie intake. </li></ul></ul>
  8. 8. Activity <ul><li>There are six stations around the room with the following object(s): </li></ul><ul><ul><li>1. Flashlight </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>2. Calculator (solar) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>3. Balloons </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>4. Electric Guitar and Amplifier </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>5. Cow Bell </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>6. Food Items </li></ul></ul>
  9. 9. Activity (Cont.) <ul><li>With the three other people at your table, rotate around the room and follow the instructions/answer the questions at each station. </li></ul><ul><li>When finished, return to your seats and we will discuss your findings. </li></ul>
