    Wikis2003 - Presentation Transcript

    1. Lynne Gibb
      • A wiki is a web page that can be viewed and modified by anybody with a browser and access to the internet.
      • It is a “living” website
      • Allows e asy collaborative document editing and creation
      • Allows multiple people to easily contribute to the same document and track the changes
    2. What else does it do?
      • Upload multimedia objects eg sound files, images, slideshows, animations, videos, powerpoint presentations
      • Easily create a web page
      • Project development with peer review (link to blog)
      • Data collection eg upload & share Word, Excel, pdf files and documents etc
      • Share other resources eg links, samples
      • Group authoring
      • Discussion threads
      • Wikis have a very simple text editor which is quick and easy to learn and does not require any coding skills.
      EDITING
    3. POINTS TO NOTE
      • Wiki contributors must understand and accept that their words may be edited or even possibly deleted
      • Power and authority is given to the community rather than individual
      • Wiki authors do not generally claim ownership of the text
    4. However….
      • There is some control over who contributes
      • Open or closed membership
      • Open – anyone can see it – anyone can contribute
      • Closed – anyone can see it – only invited members can contribute
    5. Other controls…
      • Anyone can remove anything that is put on the wiki – self-regulating
      • There is a strong commitment by wiki users to keep it clean and on track – all non-contributive comments will be deleted by other users
      • History facility logs all contributions by date, name and computer ID
      • There are many wiki varieties including TiddlyWiki, MediaWiki, Wet Paint and many more.
      • Wikispaces – is used by many educational institutions, is well-monitored and reliable.
    6. Some examples of working wikis
      • Coonaratutors wiki
      • Conversations in ACE
      • AccessACE
      • Hope this has inspired you to set up your own wiki – they are functional, easy and fun!
