Redefine Possible: Changing Your Story Empowers Your Success in Life

  2. 2. The Power of Your Story Your thoughts, beliefs, perceptions and assumptions make up the story that you tell yourself about –  who you are  who you can become  what you can do, and  what you are worthy of experiencing in life.
  3. 3. It Matters What You Believe Over a period of time, the story that you tell yourself about who you are, who you can become, what you can do, and what you are worthy of experiencing in life affects you in one of two ways:  It empowers your sense of self-worth, courage, and self-confidence OR  It erodes your sense of self-worth, courage and self- confidence
  4. 4. Key Elements of Your Story  Your story is a collection of beliefs, perceptions and assumptions.  The story that you tell yourself about yourself, other people and life creates the mental map of your world view.  Your story represents memories of experience attached to emotional interpretations of your life experiences.
  5. 5. Key Elements of Your Story  The explanation that you tell yourself about any experience shapes the beliefs, assumptions and perception that you have towards it.  This mental “reference” triggers your emotional and physical response to your experience.  Contrary to popular opinion, it’s not what happens to you but how you respond to what happens to you that defines how an experience impacts your life.
  6. 6. Know Yourself to Change Your Story Before you can begin to reconstruct disempowering aspects of your story, you have to be aware of conscious and unconscious beliefs robbing you of your capacity to be the person that you were divinely designed to be.
  7. 7. Why It’s Important to Get to the Root of Your Beliefs  Identifying experiences associated with negative beliefs about yourself, about others and life provide prime opportunities for you to consider alternative perspectives that strengthen and empower you.  Re-scripting perceptions of experiences that you feel has had a negative impact on your life from an empowering perspective taps into the courage and strength of your spirit.
  8. 8. Developing An Empowering Perspective The following are effective habits in the development of an empowering perspective:  Focus on your strengths  Focus on your capacity to overcome previous challenges to create positive change in your life  Remain mindful of utilizing your present resources  Redefine what’s possible in your life with enriching experience and supportive relationships
  9. 9. This May Happen  When we first begin to consider making a change in our lives, most of us encounter internal resistance to making it happen.  Too often we self-sabotage our capacity to create change with action or inaction that ensures the change we desire doesn’t happen.  Nurturing the habits outlined in this presentation that are essential to maintaining an empowering perspective towards changing your story can help diminish self-sabotaging behavior.
  10. 10. The Art of Possibility Rosemund Stone Zander and Benjamin Zander wrote in The Art of Possibility: Transforming Professional and Personal Life, “Many of the circumstances that seem to block us in our daily lives may only appear to do so based on a framework of assumptions we carry with us.” They point out, “Draw a different frame around the same set of circumstances and new pathways come into view.”
