In 2008, Delhi Govt. introduced the BRT corridor along with the ITS features like real-time Passenger Information System with an aim to increase the reliability of the bus service and give flexibility to the commuters. PIS help to reduce the anxiety of the commuters while waiting for the bus.

  • hello Mr jaspal nice job man keep it up actually i wanted to know whether this system for Delhi only or to other cities as well and instead cant we have offline tracking and store that in memory for a week or month like all big telecomm companies do

  • Hi Jaspal... very nice ppt on PIS. It is heartening to see implementation of a project that has been spoken about for long. Look forward to the day when we can abandon our cars and walk out onto clean streets, clean air and hop on board a comfortable regular bus service and be to Dilli Haat, chandni chowk and back. with people like you lending their effort we can hope for such an experience in the near future.

PIS System at BRT Corridor <ul><li>DIMTS has implemented a Passenger Information System (PIS) on four routes namely 419, 423, 521 and 522, which traverse through the BRT Corridor from Ambedkar Nagar Terminal to Mool Chand. </li></ul><ul><li>The System uses the Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to determine real-time information (location and time) of the bus & taking into account the current position of the buses, speed & scheduled stops predicts the expected time of arrival of bus at any stop on the selected route. </li></ul><ul><li>DIMTS has currently installed 58 PIS Boards on BQSs. </li></ul>GPS Device PIS Boards

PIS System at BRT Corridor <ul><li>DIMTS has initially fitted GPS devices on 98 New Low Floor Non-AC and 25 New Low Floor AC buses. </li></ul><ul><li>The GPS device determines the position of the bus in terms of latitude and longitude alongwith the instant time, which is then communicated to a Central Server in real time through a GPRS connection. </li></ul><ul><li>Based on pre-configured route and the current position of the bus, the time likely to be taken by the bus for reaching subsequent bus stops is calculated. </li></ul><ul><li>This Expected Time of Arrival (ETA) of buses in minutes is sent to LED Boards, again through GPRS connection. The solution helps the passengers waiting at bus stops in reducing the anxiety of waiting. </li></ul>

  6. 6. <ul><li>GPS device is fitted on the low-floor buses, which sends the real time location updates via CDMA/GPRS (Cellular Service). </li></ul><ul><li>The data is transmitted via Cellular Service Network </li></ul><ul><li>The data is stored in Central Communication Server. </li></ul><ul><li>Central Communication Server makes communication with the Application and Map Rendering Server. </li></ul><ul><li>Application and Map Rendering Server further process information like location, time, speed data and stores in the database server. </li></ul><ul><li>The server does calculation based on the assigned route, schedule and current bus location. </li></ul><ul><li>PIS (Passenger Information System) engine after analyzing all the information the server predicts and stores the expected time of arrival (ETA) for each en route bus stops. </li></ul><ul><li>Information from server is then transferred at bus top on installed display boards, which are dynamically updated over the air by PIS engine using GPRS. </li></ul>System Architecture – PIS System Flow Commuters can see the information on the PIS Boards and can also see over Internet.

Bus Monitoring System (BMS) <ul><li>It is planned that GPS system will be install in all DTC and Private Stage Carriage Buses in Delhi. </li></ul><ul><li>DIMTS will monitor the operation of private stage carriage buses through Bus Monitoring System by installing GPS system integrated with Operational Control Centre. </li></ul><ul><li>The system can generate the following types of reports, like: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Trip Performance Report </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Trip-wise Journey Time Report </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Stoppage Report </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Over speed Report </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Distance Travelled Report </li></ul></ul>DIMTS is also monitoring the operation of Buses in real-time on various parameters.
