    • To explain what is meant by digestion & why food must be digested.
  • 4. Why do we eat food?
    • We eat food to live. The food we eat makes up our diet.
    • Our body needs the substance in our diet to work, this is called nutrients .
    • The three important nutrients are, carbohydrates , proteins & fats.
  • 5. Carbohydrates
    • Carbohydrates provides our body with energy.
    • Examples of carbohydrates: starch, sugar.
  • 6. Proteins
    • Proteins are used in our body for growth & repair damage tissues.
    • Its also a source of energy.
    • Examples of proteins : fish, meat, egg white, cheese & beans.
  • 7. Oils & Fats
    • They provide two times more energy then carbohydrates.
    • Examples of fats :butter, margarine, cooking oil, oily fish & meat
  • 8. Why does food needs to be digested.
    • Carbohydrates, proteins & fats are made up of large molecules which are not insoluble in water. Only small molecules can pass through the cell membranes & enter the cell, so the large molecules must be broken down.

    • To promote growth of new cells & tissues.
    • To provide energy for growth, movement & for warm.
    • To repair damage tissues.
    • To keep us healthy.
  • 11. If you don’t eat…
    • In some countries, children do not have enough food to eat . This effects their, growth, their shorter & weighs less.
    • Some people eat very little as they think their fat & because of that, they feel weak & tired. The lack of food also affects their growth.
    • People recovering from sickness or an injury need a good diet so that the body can repair itself & be healthy again.
