modal verbs

  1. 1. CAN, COULD, MAY AND MIGHT Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs. They need an infinitive to have a meaning. Subject + modal verb + infinitive: Ex; You can ask me questions whenever you want.
  2. 2. Can is used to show ability or possibility , to ask for something and to ask or give permission . (always in present tenses) <ul><li>Can I go to the toilet? (asking permission) </li></ul><ul><li>You can go to the toilet now. (giving permission) </li></ul><ul><li>I can drive my father’s car. (possibility) </li></ul><ul><li>I can drive. (ability) </li></ul><ul><li>Can I have a rubber? (asking for something) </li></ul>“ Pope’s special ability ”
  3. 3. Could is used to show a past ability , to make a polite request or suggestion and to show possibility . <ul><li>I could run a 35 miles marathon when I was 20. (past ability) </li></ul><ul><li>Could I interrupt you for a minute? (polite request) </li></ul><ul><li>You could buy me a car mother. (polite suggestion) </li></ul><ul><li>It could be interesting to study drama. (possibility, conditional) </li></ul>Conditional, possibility
  4. 4. May is used to show probability or make a polite request. <ul><li>He may come with us tomorrow. (probability) </li></ul><ul><li>May I use your personal computer? (polite request) </li></ul>
  5. 5. Might is used to show probability or to make a very polite request. <ul><li>I might go to live in Berlin in two years time. (probability) </li></ul><ul><li>I wonder if I might open the door. (very polite request) </li></ul>
  6. 6. Possibility and probability ++++very possible; +quite impossible <ul><li>I can help you . ( here the speaker is offering himself/herself to help someone )++++ </li></ul><ul><li>I could help you . ( If you ask me to help you, then I will do it )+++ </li></ul><ul><li>I may help you . ( Now, I can`t help you, but maybe I will help you sometime in the future )++ </li></ul><ul><li>I might help you . ( I’m very busy and I don’t have time, it’s quite strange that I help you )+ </li></ul>
