  • I hear this all the time: I don’t have time to do marketing. I’m too busy. The sad fact is, once you have the time, it’s already too late. It means your business has dried up and you’re now in panic mode. The goal is to establish a sustainable marketing program that works over time and continues to fill your pipeline with work.
  • There are many reasons to market, but just to push out some that may resonate, maintaining your business – you’re going to lose clients, cases will be completed, you must replace them. Growing your business, which is pretty self explanatory; or becoming a source for referrals, which is a way to use your marketing to not only help others, but also help yourself with fees. And of course, iimpress mom. Mom loves to see what you write and hear how well you’re doing.
  • To start, you have to set marketing goals. Look back over your last year (or maybe more, depending on how long you’ve been in business) and see where your business has come from. Sort by number of clients, but also by percentage of income, time spent, etc. This provides you with a baseline. Now you know where you’ve been.
  • Where are you going? You need to identify what kind of law practice you want to be. Are you satisfied being a solo? Do you want more income? A different kind of client base? Do you want to be a bigger firm and hire an associate or two? Once you know where you were and where you’re going, you can decide how to get there. Marketing is a way to reach the people who will help you meet your business goals.
