  • 1. 1 ESSENTIAL SKILLS APPLICATION OF NUMBER LEVEL 1 WHAT IS MY PROJECT ON? My project is on types of cars, I will be looking a normal internal combustion engine, a hybrid engine and a car with an electric motor. I’ve tried to pick similar cars for each category. The three cars I have chosen are the: I worked out the average price by finding six prices and I calculated the Mean. £0.00 £5,000.00 £10,000.00 £15,000.00 £20,000.00 £25,000.00 £30,000.00 £35,000.00 Mazda3 Chevrolet Volt BMW i3 Price (Average) Car Name Car Type Range (Miles) Price (Average) Mazda3 Normal (ICE) 633 £15,653.33 Chevrolet Volt Hybrid 1812 £26,014.83 BMW i3 Electric 90 £28,603.33
  • 2. 2 Fuel Usage Car Name Fuel Type Fuel Capacity Cost Per Mile. (roughly) Fuel Cost (1 litre) Fuel Cost (Full Tank) Fuel Cost (Yearly) Mazda3 Diesel 55 litres £0.12 £1.386 £76.23 £3963.96 Chevrolet Volt Diesel/ Electric 35 litres £0.03 £1.386 £48.51 £2522.52 BMW i3 Electric 0 Litres 0 0 0 0 Fuel prices taken on the 18/02/14 I worked out the yearly cost by the Full tank times by 52. Charging Time Both the Chevrolet Volt and the BMW i3 can be charged by a conventional socket, but if you have your own parking space/garage you can have the BMW i Wallbox Pure that can charge the BMW i3 from 0-80% is less than 3 hours or have a Home Charging Station3 for the Chevrolet Volt for 4 hours. Car Name Charge Time (Normal Socket) Charge Time (Wallbox/HCS3) BMW i3 7 hours 3 hours Chevrolet Volt 6 hours 4 hours The Chevrolet Volt charges quicker using a normal socket in comparison to the BMW i3 the reduction in time is 14.29% which rounded down is 14%. However when using a Wallbox the BMW is quicker to charge compared to the Chevrolet Volt - the reduction in time is 25%. £0.00 £500.00 £1,000.00 £1,500.00 £2,000.00 £2,500.00 £3,000.00 £3,500.00 £4,000.00 £4,500.00 Mazda3 Chevrolet Volt BMW i3 FuelCost(yearly) Yearly Fuel Cost Comparison

  • 4. 4 Facts and Figures Car Name Weight (kg) Length (mm) Width (mm) Height (mm) Boot Space (litres) Top Speed (mph) 0-60 mph (seconds) Mazda3 1525 4490 1755 1470 300 132 7.9 Chevrolet Volt 1732 4498 2126 1439 310 99 8.7 BMW i3 1195 3999 2039 1578 260 93 7.0 As you see in the table the Mazda3 is the fastest, and the BMW i3 is the lightest. Vehicle Tax Rate The cost of the tax for these isn’t that much only the Mazda3 needs tax of £105, per year the Volt and i3 cost noting to tax. Overall Costs I will now calculate all the costs for a year to see what car turns out cheaper. Car Name Car price Average Fuel price (Yearly) Car Tax Total Cost Mazda3 £15,653.33 £3963.96 £105 £19,722.29 Chevrolet Volt £26,014.83 £2522.52 0 £28,540.69 BMW i3 £28,603.33 0 0 £28,603.33 Conclusion So as you see the Mazda3 is around 9000 pounds cheaper than the Chevrolet Volt the BMW i3. Overall I think the Chevrolet Volt is the best car to buy, because it has the highest range it is just under 3 times of the Mazda3 range and just over 20 times higher than the BMW i3
