    • INTRODUCTION
    • The notion of Emotional Intelligence was described firstly by
    • Howard Gardner , who introduced the idea of Multiple
    • Intelligences which included both Interpersonal and
    • Intrapersonal intelligence.
    • By then, this notion has been developed in its multiple
    • components and practical consequences by Daniel Goleman ,
    • who singled out two main under-categories of EI
    • competences: 1. The personal competences  the ability to perceive the different aspects of one’s emotional life; 2. The social competences  how we understand and communicate with the others.
LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
    • INTRODUCTION
    • The personal emotional intelligence 
    •    includes the self awareness that help us to give a sense and a name to our negative emotions, helping us to understand the circumstances and the events around us and their causes;
    • More in general the personal EI allows the self-evaluation on our own skills and limits, so to find realistic objectives and to choose the most appropriate personal resources to reach them.
    • Also the self-control is part of the personal competences and it refers to the ability in dominating our own emotions (  expressing them in a socially acceptable way and not denying or silencing them)
LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
    • INTRODUCTION
    • The social emotional intelligence 
    • is related to the caracteristics that allow us to built up a positive relationship with the others and to interact in a costructive way
    • One of the most important components is the empathy, that is to say the ability to understand other people’s feelings and emotions, by putting oneself in “someonelse shoes” so to understand the different points of view, interests and interior difficulties.
LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
    • INTRODUCTION
    • During last years in secondary schools (upper and lower) has deeply increased the attention towards the social and personal growth of the individual.
    • Only rarely this educational process has been defined and qualified such an Emotional Intelligence development
LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
    • What’s the EI
    • We can start by saying that Goleman is not the conceiver of the concept of Emotional Intelligence, but most of all he has been a divulger of that notion, helped by an appropriate marketing plan.
    • The expression Emotional Intelligence was defined by two reaserchers of the United States, P. Salovey and J.D. Mayer, who, in 1990, published an interesting study entitled “Emotional Intelligence”.
    • If we want to be even more precise, we can find many affinities between the concept of emotional intelligence and the concept of social intelligence (E.L. Thorndike, 1920, the father of the behaviourism).
LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
    • What’s the EI
    • The success of Goleman’s works on EI
    • fostered the development of training programmes and “personal growth” in a potpourri, with a mix of different “new age” approaches, that use the “emotional intelligence” label, but that are deeply far away from what P. Salovey e J.D. Mayer intended with this expression.
LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
    • So, is it possible to give a definition of Emotional Intelligence ?
    • What is interesting for the research
    • purposes   
    •    how, in the development of the personal growth in the educational system, tools and educational methods are worked out to support the rational and emotional growth process of the individual

    • Survey methodology…Premise
    • After a deep bibliographic and web-graphic
    • survey on what has been already published
    • and on what is going to be published in the near
    • future in the target field, the methodology
    • used to verify the experiences has been
    • based on direct interviews to understand,
    • beyond the names, everyone’s experience on
    • projects and/or studies in order to develop
    • the students social and personal emotions
LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
    • Who the experts are
    • University Professors studying the EI at scientific level
    • Professors, teachers, experts involved in projects, experiences and professional training about the EI
    • All the experts involved are considered
    • at national level
LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
    • Who has been interviewed
    • Teachers
    • Headmasters
    • Parents (involved in the school life)
    • Universities Professors
    • Experts
LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
    • How?
    • The interviews have been followed in a
    • precise and punctual way . Most of them have
    • been recorded (We have the I-Pod and Videos
    • files)
    • The purpose has been to survey and
    • investigate if, beyond the knowledge on EI
    • given by the scientific studies, projects for
    • the development of emotional and social
    • growth of the students have been already
    • made or tested
LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
    • First synthetic results!
    • A great percentage of the people interviewed know the EI through the work of Goleman
    • Almost no one knows more than a definition
    • A majority of people involved in the educational process believe that the growth of the emotional dimension of the intelligence is very important
    • Many teachers and educators carried on some projects on the emotional growth of the individuals even if they don’t define them “project on the EI”
LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
    • Which projects on the
    • Emotional dimension - 1
    • Teaching to students managing their
    • emotions through:
      • Sport activities
      • Drama
      • Cinema
      • Doing scientific experiments in groups
LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
    • Which projects on the
    • Emotional dimension - 2
    • Many projects are based on the integration
    • in the classes of students with special
    • needs making the other “normal”
    • students getting used to considering
    • them positively and enriching reciprocally
    • the personal behaviour
LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
    • Which projects on the
    • Emotional dimension - 3
    • Many projects based on the dimension of the
    • emotions concern business and trade
    • relationships
    • The concept itself of EI is knowing a lot of
    • popularity between the businessman and the
    • big companies managers , who used the
    • “ emotional” way to improve the business
    • performances
LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
    • EI IN SCHOOLS
LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI “ EI encompasses student’s ability and performance; it is multidimensional; it is intricately related to human growth and cognitive, emotional, social, and physical development; it reflects the whole person; it is not related to a single instance, but occurs across time and levels, through a student’s life in school, into post secondary years and during working life." Salovey & Mayer, 1993
    • EI IN ITALIAN SCHOOLS
    • In Italy there are diverse applications of EI
    • Perhaps the most significant issue regarding EI is
    • the lack of a specific methodology to facilitate the
    • development of Emotional Intelligence into the
    • schools
    • For these reasons a variety of different
    • approaches have been checked
LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
    • The QUITE project is introduced by 25 public and private schools of the Provinces of Bergamo, Brescia, Corno, Milano, Cremona.
    • The QUITE project intends to manage some innovative actions that can develop, in a synergetic manner, various aspects of the “intelligence” into the school:
    • To acquire knowledge elements on the idea of quality and on its definition and formalization in the educational context (contextual, reflective and academic intelligence)
    • 2. To study the functioning of the organization of the time-school of the institute (strategic intelligence);
EI into schools: QUITE Project LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
  • 3. To deepen the conceptual characteristics and to test in the school the operational modalities of an educational environment full of significant learning opportunities and properly supported by technologies, able to prevent the dispersion and to foster the self-orientation of the pupil (pedagogic, reflective and collective intelligence); 4. To deepen the meaning of the relationship teacher/pupil, above all in the circumstances of difficulty and disease (emotional, ethic intelligence); 5. To manage training activities of the educators about the contents above with groups of teachers from various schools, using participatory and interactive methodologies (academic, reflective and collective intelligence). “ EI into schools: QUITE Project LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
  • So, the project, through inter-school work groups, supported by consultants, aims to:  " search the essential theoretical and conceptual instruments that can inspire the educational action and the reflection on it;  " analyze examples of real situations, by underlining their problematic aspects and determining the improvement prospects;  " elaborate and pilot operative models that can be used in various contexts;  " define models of documentation of the experience that allow their communication with the aim of creating a kind of exchange where the good practices can be optimized” EI into schools: QUITE Project LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
    • Project managed by the SIE Centre (Sviluppo dell’Intelligenza Emotiva) of Moncalieri Torino for the primary and secondary schools (50 schools all around Italy)
    • It schedules curricular seminars on the EI intended as the ability to use the emotions in order to motivate oneself to the realization of the personal, school and work aims and to better face the relational difficulties .
EI into schools: “ La mente abbraccia il cuore ” Project LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
    • Objectives
    •  To teach to name and to put in words the variety of emotions .
    •  To develop the self-awareness , that is the ability to recognize, respect and manage one’s emotions
    •  To promote the subjective motivation to reach learning and growth objectives
    •  To improve the empathy , that is to foster the listening and the understanding of the emotions of the others
    •  To increase the capacity to have realtionship with the others , understanding them and facing the relationship problems
EI into schools: “ La mente abbraccia il cuore ” Project LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
    • The trainers, through the use of instruments related to the language and to the child world ( play, dramatization, nursery rhyme, tales, theatre ), favour to put in words the emotions, the communications and the problems.
    • In every experience it is developed:
    • - a phase of expression (graphic, playing, physical);
    • - a phase of emotional elaboration ;
    • - a phase of reflective elaboration.
EI into schools: emozionARTI LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
    • Experimentation, in the Schools of every order and degree, of:
    • Long-term projects and thematic courses for children, adolescents and students of the secondary schools
    • Long-term projects for the training of nursery educators, teachers and parents
    • Main didactical areas:
    • Emotional literacy and development of the emotional and social competences
    • Knowledge and self-awareness
EI into schools: FOR MOTHER EARTH® project LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
  • The activities aim to develop: Emotional skills:   identifying and labelling feelings; expressing feelings; assessing the intensity of feelings; managing feelings; delaying gratification; controlling impulses; reducing stress; knowing the difference between feelings and actions Cognitive skills:  conducting an inner dialogue to deal with situations; understanding signs of emotional states; using problem-solving and decision-making strategies; understanding the perspectives of others; understanding norms of  behaviour; adopting a positive attitude to life; developing realistic self-awareness Behavioural skills:   non-verbal; verbal They will cater for the emotional needs of children related to their age and situation EI into schools: FOR MOTHER EARTH® project LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
  • In the Italian educational system many initiatives that aim to develop the multiple intelligences have been analysed, even if these paths are not qualified under the name EI. Different didactical models have been used: pedagogy for objectives, didactics of the research, laboratories system, didactics for concepts, integrator background, conceptual maps… EI into schools: other paths of emotional education in the schools LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
    • Many are also the didactical techniques used:
    • Guided tours, experiments, manufactures, motor plays…
    • Techniques related to the application of the analogic method: dramatizations, role-playing, simulation games, drama activities…
    • Techniques related to the application of the symbolic method: brainstorming, chain tells, definitions, linguistic reflections…
    • Besides, often fruitful cooperations with families and local authorities have been realized.

  • Centro Studi H änsel e Gretel adopts a ludic methodolology to encourage the multiple intelligences in its training and sensibilization initiatives. Hundreds of schools, authorities, childhood and adolescence operators have been involved in the Centro Studi activities, within various projects addressed to adults and under-ages, in particular on the following themes: listening, communication, conflict, group dynamics, disease signals, prevention, abuse. Initiatives on EI: CENTRO STUDI H ÄNSEL e GRETEL LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
    • Methodology
    • The originality of the training proposals is based on the assumption that “ The mean is the message ”
    • The way we talk to the children is as much, if not more, important as the content itself.
    • The parents don’t pass on to their children what they think or say, but what they do and what they are.
    • At school the teachers pass on their way of being and of approaching the knowledge
    • ( It is well known that the pupils interest or un-interest for a school subject can be widely conditioned by the interest or un-interest towards the teacher and his/her method )
Initiatives on EI: CENTRO STUDI H ÄNSEL e GRETEL LETHE 2° Meeting 02.11.07 Italian Research on EI
    • The Centro Studi main activities are:
    • research, consultancy, operators training, social and school services administrators training
    • Realization and diffusion of publications in the EI area. A new series “Capire con il cuore” (understand with the hearth) has been recently published, where the methodologies of the personal abilities stimulation are pointed out through EI.
    • Research activities in the sector of the EI application in the educational system
