Former 100-meter world record holder Asafa Powell has been banned for 18 months by a Jamaican disciplinary panel for testing positive for a banned stimulant called Oxilofrine in a drug test last June. The panel unanimously decided that Powell was negligent and at fault after examining voluminous evidence. The backdated ban starts from the date of his sample collection on June 21, 2013 and will end on December 20, allowing him to return to competition about a month after his 32nd birthday. Powell said he has never knowingly taken banned substances and hopes an appeals court will provide a fair review of the facts in his case.
