Thisquestion becomes of special importance inIndia, where the Muslims happen to be aminority. The proposition that religion is aprivate individual experience is not surprisingon the lips of a European. In Europe theconception of Christianity as a monastic order,renouncing the world of matter and fixing itsgaze entirely on the world of spirit, led, by alogical process of thought, to the viewembodied in this proposition. The nature of theProphets religious experience, as disclosed inthe Quran, however, is wholly different. It isnot mere experience in the sense of a purelybiological event, happening inside theexperient and necessitating no reactions on itssocial environment. It is individual experiencecreative of a social order. Its immediateoutcome is the fundamentals of a polity withimplicit legal concepts whose civicsignificance cannot be belittled merely becausetheir origin is revelational.Islam does not bifurcate the unity of man intoan irreconcilable duality of spirit and matter.   29. 29. Church and State, are organic to each other......One lesson I have learnt from the history ofMuslims. At critical moments in their history itis Islam that has saved Muslims and not viceversa. If today you focus your vision on Islamand seek inspiration from the ever-vitalisingidea embodied in it, you will be onlyreassembling your scattered forces, regainingyour lost integrity, and thereby saving yourselffrom total destruction. One of the profoundestverses in the Holy Quran teaches us that thebirth and rebirth of the whole of humanity islike the birth and rebirth of a single individual.Why cannot you who, as a people, can wellclaim to be the first practical exponents of thissuperb conception of humanity, live and moveand have your being as a single individual? Ido not wish to mystify anybody when I saythat things in India are not what they appear tobe. The meaning of this, however, will dawnupon you only when you have achieved a realcollective ego to look at them. In the words ofthe Quran, "Hold fast to yourself; no one whoerreth can hurt you, provided you are wellguided" (5:104).(14)
