    2. 2. “The only path to finding out what life is about is a patient, slow attemptto make sense of the realities of the past and the possibilities of the future as they can be understood in the present” (Csiksezentmihalyi, 1997)Part 1 - Who I Am

    6. 6. Part 2 - Where I’ve Been
    7. 7. “If I am willing to look in that mirror and not run from what I see,I have a chance to gain self-knowledge – and knowing myself is ascrucial to good teaching as knowing my students and my subject.” (Palmer, 1998)
    8. 8. “When learning is active, students do most of the work. They use their brains… studying ideas, solvingproblems, and applying whatthey learn. Active learning is fast-paced, fun, supportive, and personally engaging.Often, students are out of their seats, moving about and thinking aloud” (Silberman, 1996).
    9. 9. “What I hear, I forget. What I see, I remember.What I do, I understand.” (Confucius, n.d., in Silberman, 1996)
    10. 10. Part 3 - Where I’m At
    11. 11. “To achieve and maintain the relationships we need, we must stop choosing to coerce, force, compel, punish, reward, manipulate, boss, motivate, criticize, blame, complain, nag, badger, rank, rate, and withdraw. We must replace these destructive behaviours with choosing to care, listen, support, negotiate, encourage, love, befriend, trust, accept, welcome, and esteem.” (Glasser, 1998)
    12. 12. “In our work in residential child care, the most important tool we possess in helping young people change, grow, and develop into well-adjusted members of society is ourselves.” (Holden, 2009)
    13. 13. Success in Math leads to Happiness
    14. 14. “If you don’t recognize you might have ended up just like the most troubled young person you know, leave this work as your lack of empathy renders you useless.” (Bill Morse in Brendto, Mitchell, McCall, 2009)

    18. 18. "Ideal teachers are those who use themselves as bridges over which they invitetheir students to cross, then having facilitated their crossing, joyfully collapse, encouraging them to create bridges of their own." (Nikos Kazantzakis, n.d.)
    19. 19. Focus on Finding Happiness:1.) Relationship-Building2.) Vulnerability3.) Conflict Resolution4.) Trust5.) Empathy
    20. 20. Relationship-Building “Who we are and the environment we create in class are at least as important as the teaching skills we possess.” (Kessler, 2000)
    21. 21. Vulnerability“We cultivate love when we allow our most vulnerable and powerful selvesto be deeply seen and known, and when we honor the spiritual connection that grows from that offering with trust, respect, kindness and affection.” (Brown, 2010)
    22. 22. Conflict Resolution“Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding.” (Einstein, n.d.)
    23. 23. Empathy“Empathy is the foundation of moral development and prosocial behaviour.” (Gibbs, 2009, in Brendto et al., 2009)
    24. 24. Trust “The slightest mistrust, the smallest unkindness, the least act of injustice orcontemptuous ridicule, leave wounds that last for life in the finely strung soul of the child. While on the other side unexpected friendliness, kind advances, just indignation, make quite as deep an impression.” (Ellen Keys, 1909, in Brendto et al, 2009)
    25. 25. Part 4 - Where I’m Going
