Cuneiform meaning “wedged shapes”, is theSumerian writing system. Cuneiform was used torecord and communicate different types ofinformation, they recorded daily events, trade, astronomy and literature. Before cuneiform, thewritings on these tablets were simple pictures, orpictograms, which represent an object or an idea. Butbecause clay is a difficult material to draw lines andcurves on, the pictures eventually became fairlystandardized linear drawings that made recording forthe Mesopotamians a lot simpler. They came to have Mesopotamian Cuneiformwedged shaped appearance because they were styluspressed into soft clay tablets with the slanted edge ofa stylus.
The Ending Of CuneiformThis trend increased as the script was modified and distributedto even more places around Mesopotamia. When the Hittitesand Old Persians got hold of it, the script was being used forIndo-European languages as well. Finally, someone in Ugaritgot fed up with the whole thing, so he/she decided to inventan "alphabet" of sorts ,with one symbol per sound. (Thisrevolution in writing wasnt discovered in Sumerian times.)
