April 26 – “People’s Daily” Editorial<br />Following an internal speech made by Deng Xiao Ping<br />CPC's official newspaper People's Daily issued a front-page editorial titled Uphold the flag to clearly oppose any turmoil<br />Said "extremely small segments of opportunists" were plotting civil unrest<br /><ul><li>Angered at statement, 27 April about 50,000 students assembled on the streets of Beijing

Demanded that the government react to statement</li></li></ul><li>May fourth<br />Tens of thousands of students from 51 campuses marched into Tiananmen Square<br />800 journalist from different Beijing publications joined<br />The Peoples Daily, The China News Service, The Workers Daily and others<br />Students wrote declaration stating:<br />Current movement is a continuation of student movement of 70 years ago<br />
  5. 5. May 13 – 19 : Hunger strikes <br />Students occupied Tian An Men Square and started a hunger strike<br />Professors of Beijing University, moved by the hunger strikes, threw a banquet<br /><ul><li>1400 people initially

Whatever you say and criticise about us is deserved. My purpose here now is not to ask for your forgiveness. I want to say that now, your bodies are very weak…<br /> … All in all, this is what I have in mind. If you stop the hunger strike, the government will not close the door on dialogue, definitely not!   10. 10. May 20 - Martial law declared<br />PLA surrounded Beijing<br />Military polices<br />Entrances to Beijing was blocked by protesters<br />

June 3 -4 : Clearing the Square<br />Armed troops and hundreds of armored vehicles tried to clear the square.<br />Troops began randomly firing at crowd<br />Tanks rolled through the crowd<br />Those who could not escape were crushed<br />Tank Man stood in front of a column of 59 tanks <br />
