  1. 1. Who Killed Mr. Maloney?
  2. 2. <ul><li>Imagine that you are a detective in the local police force </li></ul><ul><li>One of your senior detectives was found dead in his home yesterday evening </li></ul><ul><li>You are to analyse the information related to this death and discern between the fact and the opinion. </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><li>A body was found at the home of the Maloneys, located at 14th Elm Street, at 6.30p.m. yesterday evening. The victim is believed to be Detective Patrick Maloney from the local Police Battalion. The victim was found with no obvious injuries other than a patch of clotted blood at the top of his head. Det. Maloney is survived by wife, Mrs. Mary Maloney. He leaves behind no other relatives. You, as part of the Battalion, have been contracted to pursue this case. There are no obvious weapons or motives that could have caused Det. Maloney's murder. Hence, it is your job to listen carefully to the eyewitness accounts and view files related to the case to come up with a possible explanation for his murder. </li></ul>
  4. 4. <ul><li>I have a very important assignment for you today. As you know, our dear colleague, Detective Maloney, has recently been the victim of a murder. Using your good listening, analysing and speaking skills , our Police Battalion needs your assistance in helping us seek justice for Detective Maloney. </li></ul><ul><li>  </li></ul><ul><li>Before heading to our desks, let's hear what our Chief of Police has to say about the case: </li></ul>

  6. 8. Everything in the house was untouched. The house was not ransacked. The only two DNA samples in the house belonged to Seargent Noonan and Mrs Maloney.

  9. 11. <ul><li>The hair is black and short. It is encrusted with what appears to be blood. </li></ul><ul><li>1 deep semi-circular wound to the skull is present (approximately 10 cm in diameter). </li></ul><ul><li>Time of death between 5:00 P.M. 29/10/2010 and 7:00 P.M. 29/10/2010. </li></ul>
  10. 12. <ul><li>Sharp force injury to the head made with an instrument with a circular end (at least 10-cm in diameter) and at least 30cm in length. </li></ul><ul><li>This created hairline fractures to the skull.  </li></ul><ul><li>Drug Screen Results: </li></ul><ul><li>Blood screen {Immunoassay} was NEGATIVE . </li></ul><ul><li>Urine and bile samples was NEGATIVE. </li></ul>
