Much has been written about cloud computing - it is the current buzzword in both IT and business. Cloud computing is approaching the top of the hype cycle and with that hype cycle comes a lot of conflicting information as companies clamoring to define cloud computing to meet the their abilities and offerings. Microsoft’s history as premier provider of enterprise infrastructure and technology makes them uniquely suited to take the lead in defining and delivering on the promise of cloud computing.
Slide Objectives:Explain the three established terms in the industry for cloud servicesSpeaking Points:With this in mind, it’s important to understand how to talk about our Cloud Services offerings.There is a lot of confusion in the industry when it comes to the cloud. It’s important that you understand both what is happening in the industry and how we think about the cloud. This is the most commonly used taxonomy for differentiating between types of cloud services.The industry has defined three categories of services:IaaS – a set of infrastructure level capabilities such as an operating system, network connectivity, etc. that are delivered as pay for use services and can be used to host applications. PaaS – higher level sets of functionality that are delivered as consumable services for developers who are building applications. PaaS is about abstracting developers from the underlying infrastructure to enable applications to quickly be composed. SaaS – applications that are delivered using a service delivery model where organizations can simply consume and use the application. Typically an organization would pay for the use of the application or the application could be monetized through ad revenue. It is important to note that these 3 types of services may exist independently of one another or combined with one another. SaaS offerings needn’t be developed upon PaaS offerings although solutions built on PaaS offerings are often delivered as SaaS. PaaS offerings also needn’t expose IaaS and there’s more to PaaS than just running platforms on IaaS.
Software-plus-Services is the next logical step in the evolution of computing. It represents an industry shift toward a design approach that is neither exclusively software-centric nor browser-centric. Microsoft envisions a world where rich, highly functional and elegant experiences extend from the PC, to the Web, to the devices people use every day. Infrastructure and solutions should extend from the server to the cloud. Cloud services in the form of Windows Azure and SQL Azure developed hand-in-hand with on-premises server counterparts will deliver much needed choice to enterprise customers—enabling flexibility in developing, scaling, operating and migrating systems that are distributed between the cloud and the enterprise data center.
Key point: The Windows Azure Platform is a set of cloud computing services that can be used separately or together.Windows Azure is hosted in Microsoft data centers around the world. Windows Azure provides compute power, storage, and automated service management, as well as easy connectivity to other applications and access control to provide secure authorization and authentication of access to cloud resources. Also hosted in the Windows Azure platform is Microsoft SQL Azure, providing relational database services and automated management of relational service. SQL Azure can help reduce costs by integrating with existing toolsets and providing symmetry with on-premises and cloud databases. Windows Azure AppFabric helps developers connect applications and services in the cloud or on-premises. This includes applications running on Windows Azure, Windows Server and a number of other platforms including Java, Ruby, PHP and others. Windows Azure AppFabric provides a Service Bus for connectivity across network and organizational boundaries, and Access Control for federated authorization as a service.
Windows Azure, combined with other elements of Microsoft's software plus services offering, enable customers to craft solutions combining the best of on-premises, hosted, and cloud-based applications and services.
