In 2009 RWE Effizienz set out to create a secure and easy-to-use home automation solution for the consumer market. Branded SmartHome, the solution enables homeowners, regardless of their technical know-how, to reduce energy consumption and cut utility costs by controlling the heating and electrical appliances in their homes through a network of intelligent devices.

The first version of SmartHome was released in March of 2011. This was the first milestone to achieve the goal of making affordable home automation a reality for everybody

Engagement Model iQuest was engaged from the beginning in an international team, under the lead of Microsoft Consulting Services, to develop the SmartHome platform including frontend, backend and the central control unit. Early 2012 iQuest was selected as the Product Care Partner and was entrusted with the software maintenance of the live version deployed to the customers. One year later, beginning of 2013, we were finally appointed as strategic software development partner for SmartHome. During the entire time of collaboration iQuest supported RWE to develop the SmartHome platform and to deliver up to now seven major releases. A secured wireless network within the house connects any household appliance, radiator and lamp with the RWE SmartHome central control unit – to provide intelligent, centralized control of heating and energy management. An intuitive, self-explanatory interface makes SmartHome very easy to operate locally from a PC, Tablet or smartphone, or remotely via the internet. The solution allows users to set up and configure profiles by combining all devices. The rule- and workflow engine empowers users to create intelligent home automation scenarios.
