  • Text: Nehemiah 1:1-11 = 70 Y ears of E xile
  • Jeremiah 29:10-11 - This is what the LORD says: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my gracious promise to bring you back to this place. For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “ plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
  • 1050 BC = King Saul was elected as king. 586 BC = Temple was destroyed. 516 BC = 2nd Temple was built.
  • = 3 times of Return from exile (1) Jeshua / Zerubbabel - Ezra 1-6 = Temple Building
  • Ezra 1:2 - This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: “The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and he has appointed me to build a temple for him at Jerusalem in Judah. ”
  • (2) Ezra 7-10 - Spiritual Building Ezra 7:6 - this Ezra came up from Babylon. He was a teacher well versed in the Law of Moses, which the LORD, the God of Israel, had given. The king had granted him everything he asked, for the hand of the LORD his God was on him.
  • (3) Nehemiah 1-7 = Jerusalem Wall Building Nehemiah 2:4 - The king said to me, “What is it you want?” Then I prayed to the God of heaven,

  • How Can We Participate in the Building of God’s Kingdom in the Year 2011?
  • 1. Concerns of Your Relation Vs. 3 - They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.”
  • = What is the Main Reason Nehemiah could not Help but Pray? Vs. 4 - When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.

  • = What Kind of Prayer does Nehemiah Offer to God? (a) Prayer of Repentance
  • Vs. 6-7 - I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father’s house, have committed against you. We have acted very wickedly toward you. We have not obeyed the commands , decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.
  • (b) Prayer of Intercession Vs. 8-10 - “Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations, but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest
  • horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.’ “They are your servants and your people, whom you redeemed by your great strength and your mighty hand.”
  • (c) Prayer of Supplication Vs 11 - O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name.
  • = How Prayer Turn to Action? Vs. 11 – “O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man.” I was cupbearer to the king.
  • Matthew 7:7 - “ Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
  • = Do You Identify Anyone in Your Life from whom You Need to Receive Favour? Vs 11b - Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man.” I was cupbearer to the king.
  • Acts 2:46-47 - They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
  • 1Corinthians 9:19 - Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible.
  • 3. Concerns of Your Life Va. 11b - Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man.” I was cupbearer to the king.
  • Position of Cupbearer An officer of high rank at ancient oriental courts, whose duty was to serve the wine at the king's table. On account of the constant fear of plots and intrigues, a person must be regarded as thoroughly trustworthy to hold this position.
  • He must guard against poison in the king's cup, and was sometimes required to swallow some of the wine before serving it. His confidential relations with the king often endeared him to his sovereign and also gave him a position of great influence.
  • = How Genuine was Nehemiah toward the Concerns of his Prayer? 2:1-2 - I took the wine and gave it to the king. I had not been sad in his presence before; so the king asked me, “Why does your face look so sad when you are not ill? This can be nothing but sadness of heart.”
  • Psalm 6:6 - I am worn out from groaning; all night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears. Psalm 42:3 - My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
  • Jeremiah 9:1 - Oh, that my head were a spring of water and my eyes a fountain of tears! I would weep day and night for the slain of my people.
  • = Why do You Think Nehemiah did not Cover up his Sadness before the King? Nehemiah 2:2 - so the king asked me, “Why does your face look so sad when you are not ill? This can be nothing but sadness of heart.”
  • Nehemiah 2:3 - but I said to the king, “May the king live forever! Why should my face not look sad when the city where my fathers are buried lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?”

  • (2) God is Over All Nehemiah 2:7-8 - I also said to him, “If it pleases the king, may I have letters to the governors of Trans-Euphrates, so that they will provide me safe-conduct until I arrive in Judah? ….. And because the gracious hand of my God was upon me, the king granted my requests.
