As part of the on-going effort to combat rhino poaching on the Sabi Sand Reserve, it has decided to implement horn infusion treatment. The treatment procedure commenced on March 25 2013."We are undertaking the horn infusion treatment as pioneered by the Rhino Rescue Project on rhino in the Sabi Sand Reserve,” said Michael Grover, SSW Ecological Officer. “We view this as a valuable intervention to deflect prospective poachers.”The Rhino Rescue Project’s mission is to provide a sustainable, cost-effective defensive strategy to protect rhinos in South Africa and elsewhere from poaching. Its all-inclusive, holistic protection programme includes horn treatment, indelible dye, microchips, tracking technology and DNA sampling and storage. The horn is treated by infusing it with a compound made of depot ectoparasiticides and indelible dye that contaminates the horn and renders it useless for commercial or medicinal use. A full DNA sample is harvested and three identification microchips are inserted into the horns and the animal itself. “We view poisoning rhino horn as a valuable intervention to deflect prospective poachers,” said a statement by Inyati Game Lodge, one of the lodges involved in the project.
At Inyati, the days are designed to thrill you with intimate wildlife encounters and the nights to delight you with the indulgence and romance of the African night.
